A newly discovered microorganism is described that was isolated in biologically pure culture from soil and designated Bacillus sp. strain BH100 (FERM BP-2613 (FERM P-10408)). This strain is used in a new process for production of extracellular heparinase. Additionally a new heparinase having an optimum temperature for activity in the range of 45.degree. to 50.degree. C. is disclosed.

Process for producing heparinase with a bacilius strain

Biologically pure strains of Thermus sp. FERM BP-1678, FERM BP-1679 and FERM BP-1680 have been isolated, and are capable of producing a beta-galactosidase. The beta-galactosidase produced by these strains has specific characteristics wherein the enzyme is optimum at a temperature of 75 to 85 degrees celsius and pH of 4.5 to 6.5. Further, the enzymatic activity is reduced by at most 10% in the presence of 50 millimoles (mM) of galactose and glucose, respectively.

Heparinase-producing microorganism belonging to the genus bacillus

A .beta.-galactosidase having a high thermostability is produced by Thermus sp. FERM BP-1678, FERM BP-1679, and FERM BP-1680. The .beta.-galactosidase has an optimum temperature of 75 to 85 degrees celsius, and an optimum pH of 4.5 to 6.5 and an enzymatic activity which is not lowered substantially by 50 mM each of galactose and glucose. The .beta.-galactosidase is used to hydrolyze lactose in foods, such as milk, at a high temperature at which the putrefaction by saprophytes is difficult.

Heparinase produced by microorganism belonging to the genus bacillus

New microorganisms belonging to Pseudomonas putida or Pseudomonas sp., which are isolated from soil and have tolerance to one or more of hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, ketones and their derivatives or their mixture. These new microorganisms can be used in the fields of bioreactor, liquid-waste treatment, protein engineering, etc.

Microorganism capable of growing in 50% or more organic solvent

A method for culturing microorganisms belonging to the genus Pseudomonas or the genus Escherichia and having tolerance to an organic solvent such as any one of hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, ketones and their derivatives or their mixture in a medium containing the organic solvent in a concentration of 0.3% or more. The present method can be widely utilized in the fields of bioreactor, liquid-waste treatment, protein engineering, etc.
