A liquid crystal display device comprising a liquid crystal layer including liquid crystal molecules provided between a first substrate and a second substrate; pixels forming a display area; electrodes for applying a voltage across the liquid crystal layer within each of the pixels; a plurality of domain regulating structures for dividing orientations of the liquid crystal molecules and forming multiple domains within each of the pixels, when a predetermined voltage is applied across the liquid crystal layer within each of the pixels. The device also includes a structure which is formed in an outer area located next to the display area, but that does not overlap the display area, and is substantially the same as at least one of the plurality of domain regulating structures.

Liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device including a pair of substrates sandwiching liquid crystal molecules, a plurality of gate bus lines, and a plurality of data bus lines, with each of the data bus lines extending to intersect the gate bus lines and bending in a zigzag manner. A plurality of pixels are formed in areas enclosed by the data and gate bus lines, with a plurality of pixel electrodes, each covering a substantial area of one of the pixels. A plurality of domain regulating structures for regulating orientation directions of the liquid crystal molecules and for forming multiple domains are formed in each of the pixels. At least one of the domain regulating structures bends along a first side edge of the pixel electrode and domains are divided in accordance with the bending of the domain regulating structure.

A liquid crystal display device including a common electrode on a first substrate, a pixel electrode on a second substrate, and a liquid crystal layer between the first and second substrates. The device also include first and second alignment control structures formed, respectively, on the first and second substrates, for regulating azimuths of orientations of the liquid crystal when a voltage is applied thereto. The first and second alignment control structures each include a first line portion (extending in a first direction) and a second line portion (extending in a second direction, which is different from the first direction). The pixel electrode includes an edge extending in a direction different from both the first and second directions.

Vertically-aligned (VA) liquid crystal display device

A vertical alignment type liquid crystal display device including a plurality of pixels, which further includes a first substrate and a second substrate and a liquid crystal layer between the first substrate and the second substrate. The first substrate and the second substrate include alignment control structures which extend linearly, and when viewed in a direction vertical to the first substrate, in a pixel, the alignment control structure of the first substrate and the alignment control structures of the second substrate are arranged alternately. The alignment control structure of the first substrate includes first and second linear portions, and distances between the first and second linear portions and an adjacent alignment control structure of the second substrate are different from each other. Additionally, each of the first and second linear portions and the alignment control structures of the second substrate are arranged in parallel.

Vertically-alligned (VA) liquid crystal display device

A liquid crystal display device that includes a plurality of pixels, a first substrate and a second substrate, as well as a liquid crystal layer provided between the first and second substrates. A first alignment structure and a second alignment structure are formed on the first substrate, and a third alignment structure and a fourth alignment structure are formed on the second substrate, for controlling an alignment of the liquid crystal. At least one auxiliary alignment structure is also formed on the first substrate for controlling an alignment of liquid crystals. The first and second alignment structures extend linearly in different directions from each other in a pixel, and the third and fourth alignment structures extend parallel to the first and second alignment structures, respectively. Also, the auxiliary alignment structure extends substantially along an edge of the pixel.

Liquid crystal display device with multiple alignment structures

In a vertically aligned liquid crystal display device for controlling liquid crystal molecules alignment in voltage application by providing linear structures or linear slits consisting of a plurality of constituent units to at least one of a pair of substrates having an electrode thereon, there is provided alignment controlling means for forming an alignment singular point s=&#x2212;1 of liquid crystal molecules at an intersecting point between the structures on the pixel electrode or the slits in the electrode and an edge of a pixel electrode on one of the substrates.

At least one of the substrates includes a structure as domain regulating means, and inclined surfaces of the structure operate as a trigger to regulate azimuths of the oblique orientations of the liquid crystal when the intermediate voltage is applied.

In one configuration, an alignment controlling means forms an alignment singular points s=+of liquid crystal molecules at an intersecting point between the structures (or slits) and an edge of a pixel electrode. Preferably, at least one of the constituent units has bending portions over a capacitive bus line. In one preferred embodiment, the height of a portion of the linear structure opposite an edge of a pixel electrode is higher than other areas of the linear structures. Additionally, all liquid crystal molecules around an intersecting point between the structures or the slits formed on one substrate and an edge of a pixel electrode formed on the other substrate are preferably aligned to the intersecting point.

The invention relates to a substrate for a liquid crystal display that forms a part of a display of an information apparatus and a liquid crystal display having the same. The invention provides a substrate for a liquid crystal display which contributes to suppression of an increase in the number of manufacturing steps and an increase in a manufacturing cost and which improves the yield of manufacture, a liquid crystal display having the same, and a method of manufacturing the same. A liquid crystal display device including a first substrate on which a first electrode and a bus line for transmitting a signal to the first electrode are formed; a second substrate on which a second electrode is formed; and domain defining projections provided on one of the first substrate and the second substrate. A plurality of domain defining slits are provided on the electrode on the other of the first substrate and the second substrate to be aligned on a straight line, and liquid crystal having negative dielectric anisotropy is sealed between the first substrate and the second substrate. A width of a bus line opposite side end of a first slit of the plurality of slits, that is positioned closest to the bus line, is set smaller than a width of a bus line side end of a second slit positioned adjacent to the first slit.

The present invention relates to a liquid crystal display device and a defect repairing method for the same, and has an object to provide a liquid crystal display device in which a disconnection defect occurring in a storage capacitor bus line can be repaired without producing a new point defect, and a defect repairing method for the same. In the defect repairing method for the liquid crystal display device in which the disconnection defect of the storage capacitor bus line formed on a substrate is repaired, the method includes a step of forming disconnection repairing contact holes for exposing the storage capacitor bus line at both end portions of a disconnection of the storage capacitor bus line and in regions where a pixel electrode is not formed, and a step of forming a disconnection repairing conductive film for electrically connecting both the end portions of the disconnection through the disconnection repairing contact holes without short-circuiting the pixel electrode, and is constructed such that the disconnection defect is repaired by a disconnection repair path constituted by the disconnection repairing conductive film.
