In bookmaking, a sheet bundle is held in a substantially vertical posture. At first an adhesive is applied to a bottom edge of the sheet bundle in a condition that the bottom edge of the sheet bundle and an adhesive application member are pressed together with a first contact pressure to apply the adhesive between the sheets. Then, the adhesive is applied to the bottom edge in a condition that the bottom edge of the sheet bundle and adhesive application member are pressed together with a second contact pressure weaker than the first contact pressure, or are in a non-contact situation.

Bookmaking method

Bookbinding unit enabling, in encasing inner-leaf sheets in coversheets to form booklets, secure book-forming binding regardless of whether the inner-leaf sheets constitute a simple-sheet bundle or are made up of a plurality of folded-over signature sheets. Constituent components are: inner-leaf sheet tray; coversheet tray; bookbinding process path for guiding sheets from the inner-leaf sheet tray to successive adhesive-application and cover-binding locations; inner-leaf conveyor; coversheet conveyor for conveying coversheets to the cover-binding location; bundle-spine adhesive applicator in the adhesive-application location; and cover binder in the cover-binding location. Components' controller is configured to receive input as to whether inner-sheet-bundle makeup includes saddle-stitch sheets or is of simple sheets only, and, based on the bundle makeup information, varies its control of at least one of the coversheet conveyor, adhesive applicator, and cover binder.

Bookbinding unit

A bookbinding apparatus includes a collecting device, a bookbinding path, a bundle conveying device for transferring the sheet bundle to a paste applying position and then to a cover binding position, a paste applying device for applying an adhesive to a spine part of the sheet bundle, and a cover feeding path. A cover binding device binds the sheet bundle with the adhesive to the cover sheet, and a cover binding control device controls the cover binding device. The cover binding device includes a back folding press member and a back abutting plate member. The cover sheet is sandwiched between the back abutting plate member and the spine part of the sheet bundle with a small gap between the back abutting plate member and the spine part. The cover binding control device adjusts a size of the gap depending on a thickness of the cover sheet when folded back.

Bookbinding apparatus and image forming system comprising the same

A bookbinding device includes a collecting device for collecting sheets into a bundle and a bookbinding path that includes a sheet bundle conveying device, an adhesive applying device, a cover binding device, and a cover sheet feeding path. The cover binding device includes a back folding press member for the cover sheet and a back rest plate member to back up the cover sheet. A control device allows the back folding press member to execute a back folding process with a small gap formed between the back rest plate member and a back of the sheet bundle. The control device further allows the back of the sheet bundle to abut against the back rest plate member to forcibly cool the adhesive. The control device varies the time required for the cooling depending on the thickness of the sheet bundle.

Bookbinding device and image forming apparatus

A sheet conveyance apparatus conveys a posture corrected sheet bundle to a correct position, and includes a discharge path for conveying out a sheet, a tray device for stacking sheets conveyed from the discharge path in a bundle shape, and a gripping conveyance device for conveying the sheet bundle on the tray device to a predetermined finishing position. A finishing device finishes the sheet bundle gripped by the gripping device.
