Provided is an optical material composition which makes it possible to design an optical material exhibiting a broad range of properties. This optical material composition contains a compound (A) represented by formula (1), 1,2,3,5,6-pentathiepane (b), and if necessary, a compound (B) represented by formula (2). The content of the compound (B) constitutes 0-30 mass % of the total mass of the composition: (In the formula, n m represents an integer which is 0-4, and n represents an integer which is 0-2).

According to the present invention, a composition for an optical material can be provided, which is characterized by containing an episulfide compound having a value of turbidity in acetone of 3.0 ppm or less. Provided is an optical material composition, with which an optical material is obtained having excellent quality such as excellent color tone and lightfastness, a low level of striae, and high transparency when polymerization-cured. Through use of the optical material composition, which includes a compound represented by formula (1) and an episulfide compound represented by formula (2), the ratio of the compound represented by formula (1) to the combined total amount of the compound represented by formula (1) and the episulfide compound represented by formula (2) being 0.001-5.0% by mass, it is possible to provide an optical material composition for manufacturing an optical material having a high refractive index, the optical material having excellent quality such as transparency, striae, color tone, and lightfastness. (In the formula, m represents an integer of 0-4, and n represents an integer of 0-2.) 

Optical material composition, and application for same

A method for producing an optical material includes a predetermined compound (a), compound (b), compound (c), compound (d), and compound (e). The method minimizes the occurrence of a defect where peeling traces are left on a lens. The first to the fifth step minimizes the defect where peeling traces are left. First: dissolving the compound (b) into the compound (a) to obtain a first solution. Second: adding the compound (e) to the first solution obtained in the first step and then mixing to obtain a second solution not comprising the compound (d). Third: adding the compound (c) to the second solution obtained in the second step to obtain a reaction mixture. Fourth: adding the compound (d) to the reaction mixture obtained in the third step and then mixing to obtain a resin composition for an optical material. Fifth: cast-molding the resin composition and then polymerizing to obtain the optical material.
