Provided is a display device capable of switching between a wide viewing angle and a narrow viewing angle with a simple configuration and simple control. The problem is solved by providing a display element and an optical switching element which is disposed on a visible side of the display element, in which the optical switching element has a light guiding plate and a light source for causing light to be incident on an end surface of the light guiding plate, and 80% or more of the light emitted from the light guiding plate when the light source is turned on is emitted to a region at an angle of 30&#xb0; or more with respect to a normal line of the light guiding plate on a surface on the opposite side of the display element.

Display device

An edge light type backlight unit includes: a light source; a light guide plate which has an end surface, on which light emitted from the light source is incident, and propagates the light incident from the end surface; a rear-side reflective plate which is disposed on a surface side of the light guide plate; a perforated reflective plate which is disposed on a surface side of the light guide plate and has a plurality of fine holes, which penetrate from a surface on the light guide plate side to an emission-side surface facing the light guide plate-side surface and transmit light, and in which both the surface and the surface are reflection surfaces and a depolarization degree of the surface is 60% or less; and a circular polarization reflection film which is disposed on the surface side of the perforated reflective plate.

Edge light type backlight unit

A direct backlight unit includes: a rear-side reflective plate; a light source which is disposed on a reflection surface side of the rear-side reflective plate; a perforated reflective plate which is disposed to face the rear-side reflective plate through the light source and has a plurality of fine holes, which penetrate from a light source-side surface to an emission-side surface facing the light source-side surface and transmit light, and in which both the light source-side surface and the emission-side surface are reflection surfaces and a depolarization degree of the emission-side surface is 60% or less; and a circular polarization reflection film which is disposed on the emission-side surface side of the perforated reflective plate.

Direct backlight unit

An optical film having a positive C-plate sandwiched by circular polarization reflection layers with different center wavelength of reflection band, wherein the circular polarization reflection layer closest to a light exit side of the optical film does not have the shortest center wavelength of reflection band among the circular polarization reflection layers, can suppress an oblique tint change when the optical film is incorporated into a liquid crystal display device.

Optical film, illumination device, and image display device

Provided are a brightness enhancement film including a &#x3bb;/4 plate, and a reflection polarizer, in which the reflection polarizer includes at least two light reflection layers formed by immobilizing a cholesteric liquid crystalline phase, one light reflection layer of the reflection layers is a layer formed of a polymerizable liquid crystal composition containing a rod-like liquid crystal compound, and the other light reflection layer is a layer formed of a polymerizable liquid crystal composition containing a disk-like liquid crystal compound, and an optical sheet member including the brightness enhancement film, and a liquid crystal display device including the optical sheet member. The brightness enhancement film of the present invention has high brightness and is able to suppress an oblique change in the shade at the time of being incorporated in a liquid crystal display device.

Brightness enhancement film, optical sheet member, and liquid crystal display device

The present invention provides a luminance-enhancing film including a &#x3bb;/4 plate, and a reflection polarizer, including a first light reflection layer, a second light reflection layer, and a third light reflection layer from the &#x3bb;/4 plate side sequentially, the light reflection layers being light reflection layers formed by fixing a cholesteric liquid crystalline phase, and including blue, green and red light reflection layers, and Rth(550) of the first light reflection layer and Rth(550) of the second light reflection layer having inverse signs; and a luminance-enhancing film including a &#x3bb;/4 plate and a reflection polarizer including at least a light reflection layer formed of a rod-like cholesteric liquid crystal material and a light reflection layer formed of a disk-like cholesteric liquid crystal material. The luminance-enhancing film has high luminance and is able to suppress an oblique change in the color.

Luminance-enhancing film, optical sheet member, and liquid crystal display device

Disclosed is a liquid-crystal display device comprising a polarizing plate comprising a polarizing element and a thermoplastic-resin film which comprises a lactone ring-having polymer and satisfies the following formulas (I) and (II): (I) 0=|Re(630)|=10, and |Rth(630)|=25 (II) |Re(400)&#x2212;Re(700)|=10, and |Rth(400)&#x2212;Rth(700)|=35 wherein Re(?) means retardation (nm) in plane at a wavelength ? nm; and Re(?) means retardation (nm) along the thickness direction at a wavelength ? nm.
