An internal combustion engine valve timing control device includes a communication passage formed in a first rotating member to communicate with a working chamber, and including a first opening. The first opening is opened to a back pressure chamber when a tip portion of a lock member is inserted in a lock hole, and is closed by the lock member when the tip portion of the lock member is out of the lock hole. A first cross-sectional area is smaller than a second cross-sectional area, wherein the first cross-sectional area is a smaller one of a minimum cross-sectional area of the communication passage and an open cross-sectional area of the first opening, and the second cross-sectional area is a smaller one of a minimum cross-sectional area of an exhaust passage and an open cross-sectional area of an opening of the exhaust passage opened to the back pressure chamber.

A valve timing control system includes: a check valve which is provided between an oil pump driven by the engine, and the lock release passage; an electromagnetic valve which is disposed between the check valve and the lock release passage; an accumulator disposed between the check valve and the electromagnetic valve; and a passage which is disposed between the check valve and the electromagnetic valve, in which the flow of the oil is stored, and which is arranged to release the restriction of the lock mechanism by a pressure of the accumulator by energizing the valve driving solenoid of the electromagnetic valve.

A valve timing control apparatus includes: a first lock mechanism being arranged to lock the vane rotor to a first position between the most retard angle position and the most advance angle position with respect to the housing, and to release the lock; and a second lock mechanism being arranged to lock the vane rotor with respect to the housing, to a second position which is between the most retard angle position and the most advance angle position, and is on the retard angle side of the first position, and to release the lock.

A valve timing control device comprises a drive rotation member driven by a crankshaft of an internal combustion engine; a driven rotation member fixed to a camshaft that actuates engine valves to open and close, the drive rotation member and driven rotation member being coaxially arranged to make a relative rotation therebetween; a phase varying mechanism that rotates the driven rotation member relative to the drive rotation member within a given angle, the phase varying mechanism being able to cause the driven rotation member to take the most-retarded phase position, the most-advanced phase position and a middle phase position defined between the most-retarded phase position and the most-advanced phase position; and a position keeping mechanism that is able to keep the driven rotation member at least the most-retarded phase position and the middle phase position at the time of starting the engine, and is able to select one of the most-retarded phase position and the middle phase position in accordance with an operation condition of the engine.
