A surface-conditioning composition includes a particle of a phosphate of a bivalent or trivalent metal and has a pH value ranging from 3 to 12. The particle has a Dvalue of 3 &#x3bc;m or less. The composition additionally includes (1) at least one metal alkoxide selected from a silane alkoxide, a titanium alkoxide and an aluminum alkoxide and (2) a stabilizing agent.

A surface conditioning composition is provided in which a titanium phosphate compound can be stored in the state of a dispersion liquid for a long period of time while being stably present in the dispersion liquid, with favorable stability also in the bath, and with the composition being capable of forming a conversion coating film in a sufficient amount of the film even in the case of application to conversion resistant metal materials such as high-tensile steel sheets.

A composition for surface conditioning includes bivalent or trivalent metal phosphate particles having a pH of 3 to 12, with Dof the particles being 3 &#x3bc;m or less and including an amine compound having a MW of 1000 or less, plus at least one metal alkoxide in a content of from 0.01 to 1000 parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of the solid content of the metal phosphate particles.

A surface-conditioning composition can form a denser phosphate coating film having more satisfactory coating weight on the surface of a metal material compared to a conventional one and, therefore, can reduce the electrolytic corrosion of a metal material during a chemical conversion treatment, form a chemical conversion coating film having a satisfactory coating weight even when applied to a hardly convertible metal material (e.g., an aluminum metal material, a high tensile strength steel plate), improve the productivity rate of the chemical conversion treatment, resulting in the reduction of the time required for the chemical conversion treatment, and enables a metal phosphate particle to be dispersed in a surface-conditioning solution highly stably. This composition includes a particle of a phosphate of a bivalent or trivalent metal and has a pH value ranging from 3 to 12. The particle has a Dvalue of 3 &#x3bc;m or less. The composition additionally includes (1) a phenolic compound and (2) a stabilizing agent.
