A method for providing an abrasive layer on the surface of a turbine engine component is described. The method includes application of several layers of nickel; one layer includes abrasive particulates. The layer has good bond strength and has a thin cross section, thereby minimizing any effect on the fatigue strength of the component.

Method for applying an abrasive layer to titanium alloy compressor

This invention relates to an improved method for electroplating a layer of nickel onto titanium base alloy substrates. It is particularly useful in electroplating a layer of nickel onto titanium alloys which contain refractory metal elements, such as the alloy Ti-8Al-1V-1Mo. The method includes the steps of etching the surface of the substrate with a solution containing hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid, followed by electroplating the etched surface in a nickel sulfamate solution.

Method for electroplating nickel onto titanium alloys

A stripping process for the removal of plasma spray applied chromium carbide-nickel chromium coatings from nickel base alloy substrates is disclosed. The coating is decomposed electrolytically by immersing the coated substrate in an alkaline metal hydroxide solution to form the anode of an electrolytic cell and imposing a potential difference across the cells sufficient to decompose the coating without affecting the substrate.

Selective decomposition of a chromium carbide coating from a chromium

A composite article includes a compressively stressed plating which provides increased static strength and fatigue life. In particular, a fan exit guide vane (1), made of a graphite fiber reinforced composite material and including a conductive plating (7), achieves a 380% increase in static load capability over an unplated composite vane and a low cycle fatigue life of over 1 million cycles through the application of a compressively stressed nickel plating (8) which produces a residual compressive stress state of between -5,000 and -15,000 psi.
