A wireless access node to manage machine-to-machine data transmissions comprises a processing system, a wireless communication transceiver, and a communication transceiver. The processing system is configured to allocate a plurality of machine-to-machine channels reserved for machine-to-machine communications, and assign individual quality of service levels to individual ones of the machine-to-machine channels per sector. The wireless communication transceiver is configured to receive machine-to-machine traffic on one of the machine-to-machine channels. The processing system is configured to determine a quality of service level for the machine-to-machine traffic based on the sector and the machine-to-machine channel over which the machine-to-machine traffic was received. The communication transceiver is configured to transfer the machine-to-machine traffic for delivery to a machine-to-machine server based on the quality of service level for the machine-to-machine traffic.

Management of machine-to-machine traffic in a wireless communication network

A method and systems for determining a location of a Low-Cost Internet Base Station (LCIB) are described. An LCIB may engage in communication with a macro network using a wireless communication interface, such that the macro network assigns the LCIB to operate as a mobile station on a particular active set of one or more particular sectors. The LCIB may transmit data indicative of the particular active set to the macro network using a backhaul connection to the macro network. Responsive to the LCIB transmitting the data indicative of the particular active set to the macro network, the LCIB may receive a location corresponding to the particular active set from the macro network via the backhaul connection to the macro network.

Alternative location source for low-cost internet base station systems when satellite-based positioning system coverage is unavailable

A computing system includes or has access to data records that associate (i) radio frequency (RF) signatures of device coverage from a base station with (ii) locations of devices corresponding with the RF signatures. When a device whose location is at issue is then within coverage of that base station, the computing system receives an RF signature of the device's coverage from the base station, and the computing system (i) finds multiple data records whose RF signatures of coverage from the base station most closely match the received RF signature, (ii) based on the device locations in the multiple data records, determines a representative bearing from the base station and a representative distance from the base station, and (iii) estimates the device's location to have the determined representative bearing and determined representative distance. The estimated device's location may then be used as a basis to provide a location-based service.

Method and system for estimating and use of device location based on radio frequency signature of coverage from a single base station

Embodiments disclosed herein provide systems and methods for dividing packet content for transmission over diverse wireless links. In a particular embodiment, a method provides generating a packet for transmission to a destination and examining the packet to determine if content within the packet qualifies for transmission over diverse wireless links comprising a first wireless link and a second wireless link. The method further provides, if the content qualifies for transmission over the diverse wireless links, generating a first alternate packet that contains a first portion of the content and a second alternate packet that contains a second portion of the content. The method further provides transferring the first alternate packet over the first wireless link for delivery to the destination and transferring the second alternate packet over the second wireless link for delivery to the destination.

Embodiments disclosed herein provide systems and methods for augmenting call data information to determine a location of a wireless communication device. In a particular embodiment, a method provides receiving wireless signals transmitted from a plurality of base stations and determining signal strengths for at least some of the wireless signals. The method further provides identifying at least three geographically diverse ones of the base stations having signal strengths that satisfy a location-determination strength threshold. The method further provides transmitting base station identifiers and associated signal strengths for the geographically diverse base stations.

Augmentation of call data information to determine a location of a wireless communication device

Systems, methods, and computer-readable storage media for avoiding unnecessary traffic in wireless communications networks. An Internet gateway maintains an unnecessary traffic avoidance table and to determine whether a mobile device is disconnected from the network. The Internet gateway discards requested data packets requested by the mobile devices if the mobile device is not currently connected to the network, thereby avoiding unnecessary traffic in the network.

Systems and methods for providing content delivery over a backhaul link in a communication system

A method and apparatus to help detect that a particular location determination process is unreliable and to help exclude location fixes established with that location determination process from being used as a basis to provide a location-based service. In accordance with the disclosure, a server may receive at least three location fixes for a mobile station, all corresponding with each other in time and each established with a different location determination process, and the server may determine that one of the location fixes is relatively far away from the other location fixes and therefore that the location determination process used to establish that location fix is unreliable. In response to determining that the location determination process is unreliable, the server or another entity may then exclude location fixes established with that location determination process from being used as a basis to provide a location-based service.

Systems, methods, and software for identifying dormant wireless communication devices in wireless communication systems are provided herein. In one example, a method of operating a wireless communication system is provided. The method includes providing wireless access to communication services to wireless communication devices, where the wireless communication devices are associated with at least a first paging zone. The method also includes instructing the wireless communication devices associated with the first paging zone to associate with a temporary paging zone identifier and responsively receiving indications of the temporary paging zone identifier transferred by at least a portion of the wireless communication devices. The method also includes identifying dormant ones of the wireless communication devices based on which of the ones of the wireless communication devices transfer the indications, and instructing the wireless communication devices associated with the temporary paging zone identifier to resume association with the first paging zone.

A wireless communication device identifies the access network type in the Mobile IP (MIP) Registration Request (RRQ). The wireless communication device uses a wireless communication network to access the IP communication network. The wireless communication device initiates a switch to another wireless communication network. In response to initiating the switch, the wireless communication device determines the network type of the new wireless communication network and generates a MIP RRQ identifying the access network type. After the MIP Registration Response (RRP) is received, the wireless communication device sends and retrieves IP data with the IP communication network via the new wireless communication network.

Embodiments disclosed herein provide systems and methods for deriving a wireless device location from base station signaling. In a particular embodiment, a method provides monitoring signaling transmitted by a base station serving a plurality of wireless communication devices. The method further provides identifying a wireless communication device of the plurality of wireless communication devices from the signaling and identifying an active set carried in the signaling that is associated with the wireless communication device. The method further provides determining a location of the wireless communication device based on the active set.

Embodiments disclosed herein provide systems and methods for determining device movement to and from an area of interest using a route update radius. In a particular embodiment, a method provides identifying an area of interest within a geographic area and determining a first access node of a wireless communication network having a first wireless signal coverage area that includes at least part of the area of interest. The method further provides setting a route update radius to a distance that reflects the size of the at least part of the area of interest and transferring the route update radius to the wireless communication device.

The wireless communication devices have wireless device types. The wireless base stations generate performance data that characterizes the performance of the wireless device types in the wireless communication sectors. A data processing system processes the performance data to associate an abnormal condition with one of the wireless device types in one of the wireless communication sectors. The data processing system generates notice data for the one or more wireless device types associated with an abnormal condition. The wireless base stations broadcast the notice data in a Long Term Evolution (LTE) System Information Block (SIB). The notice data identifies the wireless device type. The wireless communication devices decode the LTE SIB to identify the notice data and the wireless device type. If the wireless communication device comprises the wireless device type identified in the notice data, the wireless communication device configures the wireless communication device based on the notice data.

A data processing system estimates hidden (off-net) wireless network users based on wireless communication network usage. The system processes wireless network usage data to estimate a first amount of frequent off-net users at a location in a time period based on past frequent on-net users who were at the location in past time periods at a rate above a frequent user threshold. The system processes the first amount and the wireless network usage data to estimate a second amount of infrequent off-net users at the location in the time period. The system process the first amount of the frequent off-net users and the second amount of the infrequent off-net users to estimate a total amount of off-net users at the location in the time period.

A wireless communication system receives and processes the integrated keep-alive data to transfer individual keep-alive messages having the keep-alive data.
