An oxygen permeable film including an aggregate of water-repellent particles and having an average particle size of the particles of 0.01 to 50 &#x3bc;m has a contact angle with water of not less than 120&#xb0; and super water repellency, and therefore has an excellent water vapor permeation inhibiting capability. As the particles, fluorocarbon resins such as polytetrafluoroethylene, polyvinyl fluoride and polyvinylidene fluoride are suitable. The specific surface area of the oxygen permeable film is preferably not less than 0.1 m/g and not more than 500 m/g.

An alkaline battery of this invention includes: a negative electrode including a negative electrode mixture that contains a zinc alloy as an active material, the zinc alloy containing at least aluminum; an alkaline electrolyte; and a positive electrode. The alkaline electrolyte includes an aqueous KOH solution and LiOH and an aluminum compound that are dissolved in the aqueous KOH solution. The alkaline battery has excellent high-rate discharge characteristics.

The storage characteristics of an alkaline battery are improved by suppressing the production of hydrogen gas during storage. The alkaline battery includes a positive electrode, a negative electrode, and a conductive member in contact with the negative electrode. The negative electrode includes a zinc-containing negative electrode active material and an alkaline electrolyte, and the alkaline electrolyte includes a potassium hydroxide aqueous solution. The negative electrode active material, the alkaline electrolyte, and a contact surface of the conductive member with the negative electrode include the same metal element M, and the metal element M is a metal element other than zinc.

A rectangular air battery includes: a first case having a bottom with air holes; a second case; and an insulating gasket with a substantially U-shaped cross-section. The first case and the second case are joined such that the opening of the second case faces the bottom of the first case, and are sealed by crimping the opening edge of the sidewalls of the first case onto the outer face of the second case, with the outer sidewalls of the insulating gasket interposed therebetween.
