A process of breaking up a foam into a liquid component and a gaseous component by action of centrifugal forces, includes drawing the foam axially into a centrifugal fan device by suction; then, accelerating the foam radially by centrifugal forces over a plurality of ribs and/or baffles, forcing the liquid component through a peripheral liquid discharge outlet; feeding the gaseous component through at least one gas outlet prior to forcing the liquid component through the liquid discharge outlet; advantageously feeding the gaseous component in a radial direction opposite to that in which the foam flows in the fan device, and after that, conducting the gaseous component axially through a gas outlet. The apparatus for performing the process includes a centrifugal fan acting as a pump impeller having an upper plate and a lower plate connected by a plurality of ribs and a conical cutoff cover located above the centrifugal fan acting to guide gas component flow, an axially-located foam inlet, a gas component outlet located above the cutoff cover near the rotation axis of the fan and a liquid discharge outlet formed between the cutoff cover and the lower plate at the periphery of the centrifugal fan.

Process and apparatus for breaking up foam into its liquid and gaseous

In a pressure filter for liquid media a plurality of filter elements is supported by a removable hollow cross bar which, when the filter tank is opened, can be removed together with all or groups of the filter elements. The filter element has a flexible filter wall and preferably an outer fine meshed wall and an inner coarse meshed wall. Between the two wall portions a packing material is arranged. Preferably the entire filter element is a flexible tube element. Spray tubes are arranged in the filter tank which are also removable together with their supporting carrier member. The spray elements serve to rinse out the filter cake. This may be done by passing the rinsing agent agent successively at spaced time periods through individual groups of the filter elements.

Pressure filter and process for cleaning it

In a pressure filter for liquid media a plurality of filter elements is supported by a removable hollow cross bar which, when the filter tank is opened, can be removed together with all or groups of the filter elements. A biological fermentor and improved method of aerating micro-organisms contained in the fermentor include a rotor which is mounted in the fermentor for turning movement in one direction, and a baffle element which is mounted on the rotor for turning movement with the same and also relative thereto in a different opposite direction. A motor is operative for turning the rotor and baffle element in their respective directions so as to strongly agitate the contents of the fermentor.

Apparatus and method of stirring fluids

An apparatus for separating a foam into its constituent liquid and gaseous components has a vessel in which the foam is formed, and a foam-breaking means including a housing communicating with the vessel, rotatable foam breakers located in the housing for breaking up the foam, and hollow stationary baffles for preventing a smooth circulation of the foam. The foam-breaking means also include means for facilitating the separation of the foam by admitting a heat exchange substance into the hollows of the baffles and effecting a heat exchange between the heat exchange substance and the foam. The method in accordance with the invention comprises the steps of feeding the foam from the vessel into the housing, breaking up the foam by the foam breakers, effecting turbulence of the foam by the baffles so as to prevent the smooth circulation of the foam, and admitting the heat exchange substance into the hollows of the baffles for effecting heat exchange between the latter and the foam.

A vessel is adapted to contain a liquid phase and a tubular guide baffle in the vessel has spaced open ends one of which at least in part bounds a venturi-shaped passage. A rotary impeller in the vessel has an axial inlet communicating with the one open end and a plurality of peripheral outlets which communicate with the axial inlet. A drive is provided for rotating the impeller so that centrifugal action causes expulsion of liquid phase from the outlets and thereby creates suction in the venturi-shaped passage to draw additional liquid phase from the guide baffle into the inlet. Gas admitting arrangements are provided, including a plurality of nipples communicating with the passage and with a conduit through which gas is supplied, so that the suction in the venturi-shaped passage draws gas from the source via the conduit and the nipples and the gas becomes admixed with the liquid phase.

Apparatus for mixing a liquid phase and a gaseous phase

A vessel is adapted to accommodate a liquid phase containing a nutrient liquid and micro-organisms which are to be aerobically grown. A gaseous phase is admitted into the presence of the liquid phase, and the resulting mixture is advanced to a mixing chamber where it is uniformly mixed by a rotary element having a plurality of baffles extending across the path of the advancing mixture. Additional projections also extend across the path and define constrictions therein with the baffles so that the advancing mixture is thereupon dispersed prior to being expelled into the vessel. The rotary element also has a Venturi-shaped passage provided with a throat which is operative for generating a region of suction when the rotary element is rotated so that the rate of advance of the mixture is accelerated.
