A sample separation apparatus for separating a liquid sample includes a first separation unit for separating the sample, a first fluid drive for conducting the sample to be separated through the first separation unit, a second separation unit, arranged downstream of the first separation unit, for further separating the sample, a second fluid drive for at least partially conducting the sample through the second separation unit, and a fluidic valve having interfaces fluidically coupled to the first and second fluid drives and being switchable for performing the separation of the sample. The apparatus is configured for adjusting a pressure at a predefined position to a predefined value, wherein the predefined position is in a fluidic path between an outlet of the first separation unit and an inlet of the second separation unit or in fluid communication with this fluidic path.

A method for controlling operation of a pump unit, where the pump unit includes a primary piston pump having a primary piston and a secondary piston pump having a secondary piston. The primary piston pump is fluidically connected with the secondary piston pump. The primary piston pump includes an inlet valve and an outlet valve, and the pump unit operates periodically according to a pump cycle. The method includes determining a fluid pressure of fluid dispensed by the pump unit, and performing a closed loop control of a position of the primary piston in dependence on the fluid pressure of the fluid dispensed by the pump unit during a first time interval of the pump cycle.

A mixer for mixing a fluid having a property varying along a flow direction of the fluid includes an inlet configured for receiving an inlet flow, an outlet configured for providing an outlet flow, and a plurality of flow channels coupled between the inlet and the outlet. The mixer also includes a flow distributor for distributing the inlet flow into the plurality of flow channels so that each flow channel receives a partial flow from the inlet flow, and a flow combiner for combining the partial flows from the plurality of flow channels to the outlet flow. Each flow channel has a first flow section having a hydraulic resistance substantially representing a hydraulic resistance of the flow channel. One or more of the flow channels each have a second flow section coupled in series with the first flow section of the respective flow channel.

A method for controlling movement of a piston in a metering device is described. The method comprises supplying a fluid by actuating the metering device's piston, wherein compression or expansion of the fluid causes corresponding temperature variations. The method further comprises superposing a corrective movement onto the piston movement, with the corrective movement at least partly compensating for at least one of thermal expansion and contraction of the fluid induced by the temperature variations. In one embodiment, the corrective movement imposed onto the piston movement comprises two components: a reduction () of the compression jump (), and a subsequent increase () of the piston's forward displacement rate () during a period () of time ().

A supply flow path for supplying a solvent is described. The supply flow path includes metering devices each with a piston, the metering devices being adapted for metering the solvent through separate source paths feeding the supply flow path. The supply flow path further includes a control unit adapted for controlling the metering devices' piston movement in accordance with solvent pressure, wherein a variation of the solvent pressure gives rise to a corresponding variation of a solvent volume contained in the supply flow path or a part thereof. The control unit is adapted for compensating for the variation of the solvent volume by corresponding movements or forward or backward displacements of the pistons.

Disclosed is a mixing apparatus where a fluid is progressing from an Inlet tubing to an Outlet tubing. Every segment of the liquid is part by part transferred to the Outlet channel via numerous restrictor channels. The distances between the restrictor channels determine a dispersion pattern for any segment of the flow, progressing from the inlet chamber in the form of a reservoir channel to the Outlet. The nearer the outlet channels are placed one to another, the higher is the permeability to the outlet collector at the respective location. Delaying partial flows of the fluid with different flow delays and providing different flow volumes for the partial flows results in a predetermined flow distribution function thus determining a dispersion pattern. This allows for a continuous dispersion of a fluid property which is intended to be mixed, in accordance with a predefined fluid distribution function.

Method and apparatus for mixing fluids

A method of reducing baseline instabilities in liquid chromatographic measurements is disclosed. A mobile phase comprising sample substances passes through a chromatographic column comprising a stationary phase, and subsequently through a detector. An additional solid body or liquid bath having a high heat capacity and heat conductance is coupled to the column and to an inlet capillary of the column such that the inlet capillary and the column are enclosed by said solid body or liquid bath. In that way temperature stabilization of the column and inlet capillaries is achieved and baseline variations due to temperature dependent adsorption of water at the stationary phase, in particular stationary phases with amino functional groups, are reduced.
