A method comprising decomposing mass spectrometry data, especially of ion species that undergo multiple direction changes in a periodic manner, the data comprising signal and noise measured over time, into a sum of K harmonic component signals and a noise component, wherein the harmonic component signals and their number K are derived from the data and a determined quantity representative of the noise. The harmonic component signals and their number K may be determined iteratively on the basis of: using an initial value of K to calculate a minimised non-negative measure of difference Rbetween the measured and model data comprising data sets of K-harmonic component signals, and if Rdoes not lie within a noise range based on the quantity representative of the noise, changing the value of K and recalculating Runtil Rlies within the noise range. Mass spectral information may be derived from the model data set.

Methods and apparatus for obtaining enhanced mass spectrometric data

A method of producing a mass spectrum from a time-varying transient signal detected in a mass spectrometer, the method comprising: performing a Fourier transform of the transient signal to produce a first set of complex amplitudes wherein each of the complex amplitudes corresponds to a respective frequency of a first set of frequencies; generating a second set of complex amplitudes, wherein each of the complex amplitudes corresponds to a respective frequency of a second set of frequencies with a minimum spacing less than the inverse of the duration of the transient signal; optimizing the second set of complex amplitudes to produce an improved second set; generating a mass spectrum from at least some of the improved second set of complex amplitudes; wherein optimizing the second set of complex amplitudes to produce an improved second set of complex amplitudes is based on an objective function subject to some phase constraints.

Method of producing a mass spectrum

A method is proposed for assessing the vacuum conditions in a mass spectrometer () such as an ion cyclotron resonance or orbital trapping mass spectrometer. Such mass spectrometers generate a transient detection signal resulting from ions of one or species in an ion trap (). The parameters of the trap and/or introduced ions are adjusted so as to cause the decay rate of the transient in respect of the ion species to be dominated by collisional effects. Typically this can be achieved by introducing ions into the trap () in quantities such that ion clouds of a particular ion species self bunch. The rate of decay of the transient signal in that case is determined and compared with one or more threshold decay rates. This in turn can provide an indication of vacuum conditions within the trap ().
