An air bag apparatus mounted in a vehicle in an immovable state comprises an inflator for expelling gas during a sudden deceleration of a vehicle, a bag disposed in a folded state on the occupant side of the inflator and a restricting member made of a soft material with both ends thereof being fastened to the inner circumferential surface of the bag so as to restrict the expansion height of the bag which expands in the form of a sphere toward the occupant by the gas expelled upon sudden deceleration of the vehicle. Thus, the fastening position of one end of the restricting member is defined in the vicinity of the inflator and the fastening position of the other end of the restricting member is displaced by a predetermined length on the upper side in the direction of the radius of the inflator with reference to the axis of the inflator. Therefore, the bag is able to ensure protection of the head of an occupant, without being caused to inflate upward more than necessary.

Tethered air bag

An apparatus is provided for an air bag mounted in a Vehicle such that a steering wheel rotates with respect to the air bag. The air bag inflates towards an occupant upon sudden decelerations of the vehicle, thereby protecting the occupant's head. The air bag includes a lower portion formed into a substantially straight line restricting the air bag's expanded volume and height to facilitate use with a seat belt.

A webbing for restraining a vehicle occupant, having a webbing length increasing device which is folded over and sewn together along a transverse direction of the webbing, and when a load applied between a vehicle occupant and the webbing length increasing device exceeds a sewing strength of the webbing length increasing device, stitching of the webbing length increasing device comes undone, the webbing length increasing device having at least a first sewn-together portion and a second sewn-together portion, the second sewn-together portion being provided at a webbing fold tip end side of the first sewn-together portion and having a sewing strength which is smaller than a sewing strength of the first sewn-together portion. Load applied between the vehicle occupant and the webbing, when a length of the webbing is increased at a time of sudden deceleration of a vehicle, is reduced gradually.

Webbing for restraining a vehicle occupant

A bag expandable when an air bag apparatus is activated. A single continuous strap member is alternately sewn on upper and lower fabrics so as to define a plurality of chambers in the bag comprised of the upper and lower fabrics along a predetermined direction. Thus, the single strap member may be successively sewn on the upper and lower fabrics over a range from one end of the strap member to the other end thereof, with the result that the manufacturing cost of the bag can be reduced.

Bag suitable for use in an air bag apparatus and method of manufacturing

A strip of webbing for seat belts includes webbing woven from multi-filament threads made from synthetic fiber, and a mixture of acrylic resin and silicone impregnated into and fixed on the surface of the webbing. The webbing is deteriorated less in the anti-wear property and the smoothness because the acrylic resin is dissociated less by light so that it can hold the silicone on the surface of the webbing for a longer period of time. Thus, the webbing can produce a seat belt exhibiting an excellent accommodatability.

A bag for an air bag apparatus activated when a vehicle rapidly decelerates is disclosed. The bag includes a plurality of straps and vent holes used for discharging gas. The vent holes are normally blocked by strap valves each of which are sewn to the bag to form a low strength stitch. Each of the strap valves and each of the straps are sewn together to form a high strength stitch. When a separating force produced between each of the straps and the bag reaches a given value upon the rapid deceleration of the vehicle, the low strength stitch is broken to unblock the vent holes. Hence the bag rapidly expands toward the occupant.

Bag suitable for use in air bag apparatus

In an air bag apparatus, a bag body has a bag body opening portion. The bag body opening portion communicates with a gas generating apparatus for generating gas when a vehicle rapidly decelerates. Further, the bag body is expanded by gas generated from the gas generating apparatus. A base plate holds a peripheral edge of the bag body opening portion. A plurality of reinforcing materials is superposed in layered fashion on the peripheral edge of the bag body opening portion to reinforce the bag body. One portion is held by a base member. The plurality of reinforcing materials are respectively sewn to the reinforcing materials contacting the bag body.

Air bag apparatus

A gas bag interposed between an occupant and a vehicle while inflating the gas bag. Longitudinally opposite end portions of at least one strap are retained on a body of the gas bag and an intermediate portion of the strap is threaded through a plurality of through-holes formed in the bag body so as to maintain a predetermined configuration of the bag body during inflation thereof. Accordingly, the installation of the strap on the bag body is facilitated.

Gas bag

A seat belt system provided with a take-up apparatus for taking up a webbing to be placed around an occupant in layers around a take-up shaft comprises high-friction portions which are provided in a portion remaining wound around the take-up shaft when the webbing is placed around the occupant and which each have a larger coefficient of friction than that of the webbing. It is therefore possible to reduce tightening of the portion remaining wound around the take-up shaft when the webbing is placed around the occupant.

Seat belt system

An occupant restraining webbing employed in a seatbelt system for a vehicle includes warp which has a dry tenacity of 8.8 gr/De or more, a thickness of 1,700 De or less and a twist multiplier of 3,100 to 5,500. Thus, it is possible to reduce the extra amount by which the webbing is undesirably wound off after the rotation of a takeup shaft for winding off the webbing from a webbing retractor has ceased.
