There is provided a liquid crystal composition which has favorable characteristics and excellent characteristic balance as a material for an element used for phase control of an electromagnetic wave signal with a frequency of 1 MHz to 400 THz. A liquid crystal composition which contains at least one compound selected from the group consisting of compounds represented by Formula (1), and is used for phase control of an electromagnetic wave signal with a frequency of 1 MHz to 400 THz:

One aspect is contemplated for providing a device having a liquid crystal material exhibiting a dielectric constant of 1000 or more at a temperature at which a specific liquid crystal phase is developed, and a unit configured to apply voltage to the liquid crystal material at the temperature at which the specific liquid crystal phase is developed.

Liquid crystal device

A liquid crystal medium that has stability to heat, light and so forth, a wide temperature range of a liquid crystal phase and significantly large dielectric anisotropy to develop an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase is required. Moreover, various optical devices that can be used in a wide temperature range, and have a short response time, a large contrast ratio and a low drive voltage are required. A liquid crystal composition contains an achiral component T containing at least one compound (1) represented by formula (1) and a chiral agent to develop an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase, wherein in formula (1), Ris alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, L, Land Lare each independently hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine; and Yis fluorine, CF, or &#x2014;OCF. 

Liquid crystal medium, optical device and liquid crystal compound

A liquid crystal composition is described, containing a chiral agent and achiral component T containing at least one compound 1 having an unsubstituted or methyl group-substituted dioxane ring and having at least one &#x2014;COO&#x2014; or &#x2014;CFO&#x2014; as a connecting group, and exhibiting an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase.

Optically isotropic liquid crystal composition and optical device

A liquid crystal composition contains an achiral component T and a chiral dopant and exhibiting an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase. Optically isotropic liquid crystal medium and optical device

A liquid crystal medium has stability to heat, light and so forth, and significantly high dielectric anisotropy, and develops an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase. Moreover, various kinds of optical devices can be used in a wide temperature range and have a short response time, a large contrast ratio and low driving voltage. A liquid crystal composition contains achiral component T containing at least one compound 1 represented by formula (1) and a chiral agent, and develops the optically isotropic liquid crystal phase.  In formula (1), for examples, Ris alkyl, Land Lare each independently fluorine or hydrogen, and Xis halogen.

A liquid crystal medium having stability to heat, light and so forth, a wide liquid crystal phase temperature range, a low driving voltage and a small permittivity and exhibiting an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase is described. An optical device or the like having a short response time, a large contrast ratio, a low driving voltage and a small permittivity is also described. The liquid crystal composition contains an achiral component (T) and a chiral agent, and exhibits an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase. The achiral component (T) includes at least one compound represented by formula (1): wherein, for example, Ris alkyl having 1 to 12 carbons, Aand Aare 1,4-phenylene, Zand Zare single bonds, Zis &#x2014;COO&#x2014; or &#x2014;CFO&#x2014;, Lis hydrogen, fluorine or chlorine, Yis fluorine, chlorine, &#x2014;CFor &#x2014;OCF, n1 and n2 are each independently 0 or 1, and n1+n2&#x2267;1.

An optically isotropic liquid crystal composition is described. The liquid crystal composition contains an achiral component T and a chiral agent, contains at least one compound represented by formula (1) as a first component of the achiral component T, and exhibits an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase: wherein, for example, Ris alkyl having 1 to 20 carbons; Lto Lare independently hydrogen or fluorine; Zto Zare each independently a single bond, &#x2014;COO&#x2014; or &#x2014;CFO&#x2014;, but at least one thereof is &#x2014;COO&#x2014;; n1 and n2 are each independently 0 or 1; and Xis halogen.

A cholesteric liquid-crystal composition is described, which contains a liquid-crystal component and a chiral agent, and has a selective reflection wavelength in the range of 400 nm to 800 nm at 25&#xb0; C.

Liquid-crystal composition

A liquid crystal medium having stability to heat, light and so forth, a wide temperature range of a liquid crystal phase, a large refractive index anisotropy and a large dielectric anisotropy and an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase is described. A liquid crystal composition is characterized by exhibiting the optically isotropic liquid crystal phase and containing achiral component T containing at least one compound selected from the group of compounds represented by formula (1) as a first component, and a chiral agent: wherein, for example, Ris alkyl having 1 to 20 carbons, L, L, L, L, Land Lare independently hydrogen or fluorine, and Xis halogen.

A liquid crystal medium having an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase is described, which has stability to heat, light and so on, a broad temperature range of liquid crystal phase, a large optical anisotropy and a large dielectric anisotropy. A liquid crystal composition is described, which includes an achiral component T and a chiral dopant and exhibits an optically isotropic liquid crystal phase. The achiral component T contains, as its first component, at least one compound selected from compounds represented by formula (1), wherein Ris Calkyl, the rings Ato Aare 1,4-phenylene, Zto Zare single bonds, Yand Yare fluorine; Xis halogen, and i, j, k, m, n, p and q are independently 0 or 1.
