A multifunction printer is capable of performing a plurality of functions. Each function is performed by a corresponding device incorporated in the multifunction printer. The multifunction printer includes a display unit, a malfunction detecting section, and a display controller. The malfunction detecting section is configured to detect a malfunction that has occurred within the multifunction printer. When one of the plurality of functions is selected, if the malfunction detecting section has detected the malfunction, the display controller causes the display unit to display a malfunction message indicative of the malfunction.

To reduce the amount of memory used and process time in an expansion process, an editing process part () is used to select a mode of reproduction of page state. Before printing data of intermediate form is stored in an intermediate-form printing data memory (), a register process part () included in an editing process part () analyzes the data and detects in what page state the data is reproduced on paper. The page state is converted into page state data and added to printing data of intermediate form. Therefore, an expansion process part () at the next stage performs the expansion process on the basis of page state data and therefore need not secure an assumed maximum amount of memory used for the expansion process.

There is disclosed a method wherein an origin is set on the dither pattern and the dither pattern is rotated relative to the origin by a required screen angle. By rotating the dither pattern, real-number coordinates of an origin of adjacent dither patterns are obtained. Coordinates of the origin of the adjacent dither pattern are corrected by rounding fractions of the real-coordinate so that the real-number coordinates are changed to integer coordinates. An angle which a segment connecting an origin of the dither pattern to be based on and that of the adjacent dither pattern obtained after the correction forms with a horizontal line is selected as a screen angle. By this, the shape of the dither pattern obtained after being rotated becomes uniform, preventing the occurrence of moire.

Method for generating threshold patterns and gradation image binarizing device

A color image printing apparatus has a plurality of positioning mechanisms each of which selectively positions a corresponding photoconductive drum at an operative position and a non-operative position. A controlling section selectively controls the positioning mechanisms in a first operation mode or in a second operation mode according to the color detected in the color plane by the color detecting section. The first operation mode is a mode where the controlling section causes a positioning mechanism corresponding to the color detected by the color detecting section to the operative position, and the positioning mechanism remains at the operative position throughout the job once it is brought to the operative position. The second operation mode is a mode where if only black is detected in the first page of a job then a photoconductive drum corresponding to black is brought to the operative position, and if any one of yellow, magenta, and cyan black is detected in a subsequent page, the controlling section causes all of the positioning mechanisms to be brought to their operative positions.

An image data adjusting method for increasing/decreasing the number of pixels of input image data in a given direction with a desired magnification to obtain output image data. The method includes deriving an integral magnification for each of all the pixels of the input image data per direction in which the number of pixels of the input image data is increased/decreased, and copying a pixel value of each of the pixels based on the integral magnification to obtain the output image data.

Image data adjusting device and method

An image data adjusting device adjusts the number of pixels of input image data. The device includes a data adjusting table representing magnifications for all the pixels of the input image data per direction in which the number of the pixels of the input image data is adjusted. The device further includes a data adjusting section which refers to the data adjusting table and copies each of the pixels serially inputted in a scan direction as many times as represented by the corresponding magnification of the data adjusting table, thereby to obtain output image data.

A continuous-tone image is converted to a bi-level image by first applying an inverse gamma correction to a threshold matrix, then comparing the gray levels in the continuous-tone image with the corrected threshold values. The threshold matrix may be selected from a library of threshold matrices, and the inverse gamma correction applied by using a gamma correction table selected from a library of such tables. Alternatively, a library containing at least one corrected threshold matrix, to which the inverse gamma correction has already been applied, may be stored.

Method and apparatus for converting continuous-tone images to bi-level images

A dithering device converts a multi-gradation image into a binary image by comparing, in sequence, values of pixels forming the multi-gradation image with threshold values of corresponding elements forming a dither matrix. For determining the element corresponding to the pixel, the dithering device uses an array representing a relationship between a first group of positions of the elements to be used currently and a second group of positions of the elements to be used next. By referring to the array, the dithering device determines the position of the element from the second group based on the position of the element in the first group so as to compare the next pixel with the threshold value of the determined element.

Dither patterns are generated for use in converting a gray-scale image to a bi-level image. The dither patterns simulate halftone screen patterns with arbitrary screen angles. The dither patterns are made up of unit patterns, and have sizes calculated so that the unit patterns match up at the edges of the dither pattern.
