An endoscope device is provided which includes a manipulation portion and an inserted portion connected thereto, and an endoscope holder is provided at an elevated position, for example, on a ceiling. The endoscope device is rotatably suspended from the endoscope holder with its inserted portion extending downward. The endoscope holder has an endoscope manipulation unit for operating the endoscope device and peripheral equipment.

The endoscope apparatus is provided with an endoscope, a light source apparatus and an imaging controlling apparatus. The endoscope comprises an elongate insertable part having an observing window and illuminating window in the tip part, an image forming optical system opposed to the observing window within the tip part of the insertable part, an illuminating light transmitting system inserted through the insertable part and emitting an illuminating light out of the illuminating window, an imaging apparatus imaging an object image formed by the image forming optical system and a first signal transmitting system connected to the imaging apparatus. The entrance end side of the illuminating light transmitting system and the base end side of the first signal transmitting system are integrated and are provided at the end with a connecting part. A second signal transmitting system connected to the first signal transmitting system is extended from the imaging controlling apparatus. A first connecting apparatus removably connects the entrance end of the illuminating light transmitting system in the connecting part to the light source apparatus and a second connecting apparatus removably connects the base end of the first signal transmitting system and the end of the second signal transmitting system in the connecting part with each other. The first signal transmitting system relating at least to imaging signals are preferably made substantially equal in the characteristic impedance.

A circuit board has at least two connecting terminal groups. One connecting terminal group of the circuit board is connected to the first external terminal group, and the other connecting terminal group is connected to one end portion of a first conductive wire group of a power cable. One end portion of a second conductive wire group of the power cable is connected to the second external terminal group. The other end portion of each of the first and second conductive wire groups is connected to the camera control unit. Therefore, the camera head can be rendered compact.

In a distal end portion of the insertion section is arranged a solid-state imaging apparatus 40 for converting an optical image imaged by an objective unit into an electric signal and outputting the signal. The imaging apparatus includes a base and a solid-state imaging element tip mounted on the base and having a light-receiving section and a plurality of electrodes. A plurality of leads are provided at the base. A transparent cover plate is fixed to the base and has a surface facing the light-receiving section. A lead pattern is formed on the surface of the cover plate and electrically connects the leads and the electrodes.

A connecting device includes a first connecting section to which a camera is detachably connected, and a second connecting section detachably connected to an eyepiece section of an endoscope. The first connecting section has a main body which includes a circular fitting recess with an inner surface and support holes each of which opens into the inner surface and extends radially. Each locking body has a slidable portion movable in the corresponding hole along the axial direction thereof, and a semispherical pressing portion. The image sensor unit comprises an electroconductive image sensor housing whose forward end portion is attached to the outer periphery of a rear end portion of the lens frame and which has a recess at the rear end portion, electric circuit section comprised of a solid-state image sensor fitted into the recess of the image sensor housing and having a plurality of lead-in pins and electric circuit components electrically connected to the lead-in pins, electroconductive shield pipe attached at a forward end portion to the outer periphery of the rear end portion of the image sensor housing, having a rearwardly extending rear end and including the whole electric circuit section therein, a cable fixing frame located behind an electric circuit section, fixed to the rear end portion of the shield pipe with an electroconductive pipe holder and having a through recess or recesses, and shielding wires inserted into the shield pipe and each having an outer cover, external conductors, and internal conductors electrically connected to associated electric components or lead-in pins.

In a method of cleaning an endoscope, the open ends of an air/liquid supply valve cylinder and a suction valve cylinder, both provided within a control section of the endoscope, are closed by stops. The ends of an air supply channel, a liquid supply channel and a suction channel, which open to a connector mounted on the distal end of a light guide cable, are connected to a connecting tube so that liquid may flow between these ends. The other end of the suction channel opening to the distal end of an insertion section is connected to a liquid tank filled with liquid through a liquid supply tube. The tank is connected to an air pump through an air supply tube. When the pump is operated, the liquid is supplied from the other end of the suction channel and discharged from a nozzle through the three channels, valve cylinders and the connecting tube, thereby cleaning the interiors of these channels and valve cylinders with the liquid.
