A lithium metal electrode having an artificial interphase layer is provided. The artificial interphase layer conducts lithium ions but is nonconductive of electrons. A method to prepare the lithium metal electrode is also provided. A solid state electrochemical cell containing the lithium metal electrode is provided. A solid state lithium-sulfur electrochemical cell is provided which has a sustained discharge capacity of about 3 mAh/cm.

A microwave induced solvothermal method to prepare lithium thiophosphate composites including &#x3b1;-LiPSand crystalline LiPSis provided. The method is scaleable to commercial size production.

Microwave synthesis of lithium thiophosphate composite materials

A zinc ion hybrid battery is provided. The battery contains an anode capable of intercalation and de-intercalation of zinc ions, a cathode having a 4V active material capable of intercalation and de-intercalation of zinc ions, lithium ions and both zinc and lithium ions; and an aqueous electrolyte which comprises: water, and a zinc salt of an anion comprising a fluoroalkylsulfonyl group of formula (I):R&#x2014;SO2-&#x2003;&#x2003;(I)wherein R is a perfluoroalkyl group of 1-5 carbons.

Rechargeable aqueous hybrid battery

An electrode active material comprising an amorphous or crystalline composite of phosphorous sulfide having the general formula MPs, wherein M is a metal and x, y, and z are positive whole numbers. Electrochemical cells and a reversible battery having a cathode containing one of the electrode active materials are also provided. In specific embodiments, the battery is a magnesium battery. In addition, methods of forming the composites and electrodes via ball milling and in situ electrochemical reactions are provided.
