The invention provides a highly-reliable face collation apparatus and biometrics data collation apparatus in both of which when a person is to be identified, even at the time of a collation in which characteristic data on the person approximates to characteristic data on one of the other persons, the characteristic data are comprehensively collated by combination, whereby the person and the other person can be clearly discriminated from each other to reduce collation errors. The face collation apparatus includes a face image acquiring unit for acquiring face images, a storage unit in which a plurality of different face images on each of persons who are collation targets are stored in advance in such a manner as to be associated with each of the persons, a calculating unit for calculating collation degree data obtained by comparing the acquired face images with the stored face images, an extracting unit for extracting face images of high collation degrees by a predetermined number from among the calculated collation degree data, and an identifying unit for identifying a person when all face images of the person are contained in results extracted by the extracting unit.

It is intended to provide a gate system which prevents an abuse of a storage medium such as a card carried by a user to pass through a gate and reduces the time to require for determining whether to permit passing so as not to cause jams when passing through the gate. The gate system includes: a user identification apparatus which identifies a registered user who is matched with a user who wants to pass through a gate from registered users; and a gate apparatus which forms the gate, wherein the user identification apparatus includes: an image pickup means which takes an image of the face of a passing user before the user reaches the gate; identification and verifying means which identifies a registered user from the taken image; and medium information sending means which sends medium information about a storage medium carried by the registered user to the gate apparatus, the information being stored in association with the identified registered user, and the gate apparatus includes: medium information receiving means which receives the medium information from the user identification apparatus; medium reading means which reads the medium information from the storage medium carried by the passing user; and validating and verifying means which verifies the read medium information against the received medium information by the medium information receiving means.

A dual light source optical recording and playback system which comprises a first light source which is a semiconductor laser for irradiating tracks of a recording medium with recording spot light to record pits as information units, a second light source for irradiating the tracts with playback spot light, detection means for detecting the output of the semiconductor laser which changes in response to return light available as the recording spot light is reflected on the track of the recording medium and returned to the semiconductor laser, and a timing signal generator for generating a timing signal for the recording of the next pit on the track in response to a detection output from the detection means which corresponds to the return light due to reflection by the recorded pit.
