Mapping of ports to other network components is generated by physically bending a fiber optic cable and then determining which optical network terminals experience a signal power loss (or receive attenuated signals) based on the bending. The physical bending can be done using a bending tool and the optical network terminals that experience the signal power loss can be identified using a back-end database operation. Generally, the correspondence between the physical bending and the power loss at the downstream components and or upstream components of the network is used to create the mapping of the ports at the splitter level.

Mapping ports in a passive optical network

Unlike conventional methods and systems for locating ingress, which only monitor the upstream path, a method and system of locating ingress by monitoring the downstream path is provided. A test system measures the signal quality in the upstream path and in dependence upon a noise level being above a predetermined limit, polls a plurality of terminal equipment devices to return a downstream signal quality measurement. The test instrument analyzes the downstream signal quality measurements to locate an ingress source contributing to the noise.

Method and system for locating ingress utilizing customer premises equipment

Non-disruptive sweep measurements using low power coherent signals overcome the limitations of prior art frequency response systems for cable networks. Modulated or unmodulated, e.g. continuous wave (CW), test signals are transmitted into the network at a first or input point (input point is in the head end for forward sweep; input point is in the field for reverse sweep). The test signals are transmitted continuously at multiple frequencies, so as a composite they form a wideband, OFDM-like (orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing) waveform. A receiver at a second or output point generates power reading measurements, from which the frequency response of the network is produced.

Non-disruptive sweep measurement using coherent detection

A signal leakage in a cable network may be detected by using a test device to obtain a spectrum of an electromagnetic wave propagating in vicinity of the cable network, and automatically detecting QAM channels in the obtained spectrum by detecting characteristic spectral roll-offs at boundary frequencies between QAM channels of the cable network. A test device may be used to determine which QAM channels are currently active on the cable network, thereby facilitating automatic QAM signal leakage detection.

Detecting signal leakage in cable networks

A network testing device may be linked to a dedicated remote server e.g. a cloud-based server having a unique, pre-determined address. The testing device may be configured to cease operating, become locked or limited in testing functionality after a number of startup cycles, days of use, a certain date, etc. Once the testing device is locked, the testing device may be re-activated only by establishing a connection to the server. A database of network testing devices currently in use may be provided. Once a testing device is lost or stolen, the database may be remotely updated to prevent reactivation of that testing device, so as to render the lost or stolen testing device useless for an unauthorized operator of the testing device.

Lockable network testing device

A method and apparatus enables customized receipt of syndicated data feeds according to designated time periods. According to an exemplary embodiment, the method includes the steps of enabling a user to select a first syndicated data feed to be received by a first device during a first time period, and enabling the user to select a second syndicated data feed to be received by a second device during a second time period different from the first time period.

Method and apparatus for customizing syndicated data feeds

A test device is disclosed having a display and a graphical user interface (GUI) that provides guidance to a user by displaying first and second icons for representing first and second actions to be taken by the test device upon selecting the first and the second icons, respectively, by the user. To provide the guidance to the user, the second icon has graphical features indicative of the current status of the first action. For cases where the first action is a test that failed, the second action is highlighted thereby guiding the user to take the second action in response to the failed test. At least one of the graphical features of the second icon is indicative of whether the second icon is currently selectable by the user.

Interactive test device and a method of testing of a cable network

A remote testing device, including a cable modem circuit, requests an IP address from a remote cable modem termination system (CMTS) and receives back IP connection information including adaptive equalizer coefficients, which represent compensation and/or correction for transmission path noise. Using the equalizer coefficients, the remote testing device can determine a phase response, phase angles for each frequency increment over a channel bandwidth, and group delay.
