There is provided an apparatus capable of carrying out an accurate bioelectrical impedance measurement by determining whether contact of a living body with electrodes used at the time of the bioelectrical impedance measurement is normal or not more accurately. The apparatus uses a parameter associated with a phase difference in determining the contact condition of the living body with the electrodes. As the parameter associated with a phase difference, the apparatus uses a value represented by X/R wherein R is a resistance component in a bioelectrical impedance to be measured and X is a reactance component in the bioelectrical impedance and determines that contact of the living body with the electrodes is not normal when the value of X/R is out of a determination range such as a&#x3c;X/R&#x3c;b (a and b are real numbers).

Disclosed is a visceral fat estimation apparatus, comprising: an input device: an estimation device; a target calorie intake determination device; a calorie consumption determination device; an allowable calorie intake update device; and a calorie consumption device. According to the present invention the input device enters at least height, body weight and body fat rate of a person to be measured, and the estimation device estimates a visceral fat area based in the input value entered by the input device. The arithmetic and control unit is responsive to depression of the data-modifying switches subsequent to depression of the measurement starting switch for putting the measuring apparatus in its inputting state, thereby permitting alteration of a selected one of the plurality of pieces of information. Renewal of often changeable variables selected among those stored in the memory is permitted without the necessity of repeating the inputting and recording of the other data. Such exclusive renewal improves significantly the operability of such measuring apparatus.

The calculator estimates body density using a formula having a correction term either for increasing the body density upon increase of the impedance compared to the original impedance or a correction term for decreasing the body density upon increase of the weight with respect to the original weight.
