An overlapped-sheet detection apparatus can detect whether sheets are overlapped and shift the same, if overlapped, for further processing. The overlapped-sheet detection apparatus is provided with conveying belts, forwarding and shifting rollers, motor and discriminator. Conveying belts hold and convey sheets on a conveying path. Forwarding roller is provided at the conveying path to forward sheetsin a conveying direction and forward sheets in conveying direction. Shifting roller is provided opposite to forwarding roller to shift sheets back to a direction which is the reverse of conveying direction if the sheets are overlapped. Motor supplies shifting roller with driving torque to shift sheets back to the direction reversed to conveying direction. An encoder is built in motor to detect a rotation state of shifting roller. Discriminator judges from an output of the encoder whether sheets are overlapped. When sheets are overlapped, forwarding roller makes contact with upper sheet and sends the same in conveying direction but shifting roller shifts lower sheet in a direction reversed to conveying direction.

The switchback device has two switchback portions for inverting the conveying path of paper-like materials and a detour conveying path. The switchback portions receive paper-like materials in the nip between the switchback rollers and the pinch rollers, clamp the paper-like materials, decelerate, stop, and accelerate them in the opposite direction in a clamping state, thereby switch back the paper-like materials. The stopping time of paper-like materials in the switchback portions is changed according to the length of the paper-like materials in the conveying direction.

Switchback device and switchback method

The group data and order data items of each of cards transferred one by one are read by a reader, and then stored in a memory under the control of a control circuit of a handling apparatus in which each card is sorted into that one of the regulating box groups which corresponds to the read group data and cards sorted into each box group are received one by one in a plurality of regulating boxes, and in which the memory stores the relation between the regulating boxes and order data items, a time table prestores data on a transfer time period corresponding to the distance between each regulating box and a discharge reference point of a corresponding exit transfer passage, and the discharge order of the cards is determined by the control circuit by use of the order data and transfer-time data, thereby to discharge cards, arranged in order, into collecting sections.
