A compressed self-ignition type internal combustion engine includes a fuel injection nozzle provided such that a plurality of injection holes are exposed from a cylinder head of the internal combustion engine to a combustion chamber, and a plurality of hollow ducts configured such that an inlet and an outlet are exposed to the combustion chamber. The plurality of ducts are configured such that each fuel spray injected from the plurality of injection holes of the fuel injection nozzle passes from the inlet to the outlet. The internal combustion engine includes a heating device for heating at least one of the plurality of ducts.

This fuel property estimation device is used in an internal combustion engine that uses a mixed fuel of three kinds of fuel and includes a first sensor that outputs a signal responsive to a physical property of the fuel in a fuel route and a second sensor outputs a signal responsive to an oxygen concentration of exhaust gas. This device measures a physical property value of the mixed fuel based on a first sensor signal, and calculates an air-fuel ratio value at stoichiometric combustion state using feedback of a second sensor signal. This device estimates a composition ratio of the mixed fuel based on the measured physical property value and the calculated air-fuel ratio value by referring to a relationship between the composition ratio of the mixed fuel and the physical property value and a relationship between the composition ratio of the mixed fuel and a theoretical air-fuel ratio value.

A controller for an internal combustion engine that has a port injection valve and is capable of running on a gasoline/alcohol mixed fuel comprises: load detecting means that detects a load during operation of the internal combustion engine; alcohol concentration detecting means that detects an alcohol concentration of the mixed fuel; and synchronous fuel injection increasing means that increases a fuel injection amount in a synchronous injection period in response to the load when the load detected by the load detecting means is higher than a predetermined load value and the alcohol concentration detected by the alcohol concentration detecting means is higher than a predetermined concentration value, the synchronous injection period being a period in which a period in which an intake valve is opened and a period in which the mixed fuel is injected from the port injection valve overlap with each other.

A control apparatus for an internal combustion engine is provided. The internal combustion engine includes an exhaust catalyst and a fuel injection valve. The control apparatus includes: an electronic control unit. The electronic control unit is configured to: (a) acquire a cetane number of a fuel for the internal combustion engine; (b) acquire a target light-off temperature on the basis of the cetane number, the target light-off temperature being a light-off temperature of the exhaust catalyst; (c) acquire an exhaust gas temperature of the internal combustion engine; and (d) when the exhaust catalyst is heated, control additional injection on the basis of a difference between the exhaust gas temperature and the target light-off temperature, the additional injection being carried out after main injection of the fuel injection valve.

An object of the invention is to provide a technology pertaining to a control system for an internal combustion engine using CNG to allow an internal combustion engine to operate appropriately even when properties of CNG change. To achieve the object, in the control system for an internal combustion engine using compressed natural gas according to the invention, when air-fuel ratio feedback control that corrects the fuel injection quantity in such a way as to make the air-fuel ratio of the air-fuel mixture burned in the internal combustion engine substantially equal to a target air-fuel ratio, a control parameter relating to a condition of combustion of the air-fuel mixture is corrected based on the magnitude of the correction value in the air-fuel ratio feedback control.

A gas-mixture-ignition-time estimation apparatus for an internal combustion engine estimates the temperature of a premixed gas mixture for PCCI combustion (i.e., cylinder interior temperature Tg), while relating it to the angle CA, on the basis of a state quantity of the cylinder interior gas at the time of start of compression (CAin) (heat energy of the cylinder interior gas at the time of start of compression), the amount of a change in the state quantity of the cylinder interior gas attributable to compression in a compression stroke (minute piston work), and the heat generation quantity of a cool flame generated in PCCI combustion prior to autoignition (hot flame) (cool flame heat generation quantity Aqlto). A time when the cylinder interior temperature Tg reaches a predetermined autoignition start temperature Tig is estimated as an autoignition start time (Caig) of the premixed gas mixture related to PCCI combustion. Since the cool flame heat generation quantity Oqlto is taken into consideration, the autoignition start time related to PCCI combustion can be estimated accurately.

An injection timing measuring method and device require a reduced amount of time for calculation. A reference position signal is generated at a predetermined crank angle within the range of 30.degree. CA to 90.degree. CA prior to TDC. Crank angle signals from a crank angle sensor are used as main measuring increments to measure a period starting from generation of the reference position signal and ending upon generation of an injection signal by a lift sensor provided in an injection valve unit, and another period starting from generation of the reference position signal and ending upon generation of a TDC signal. The injection timing relative to the TDC is provided as a difference between the two periods. Each period is precisely measured by counting crank angle signals generated within the period and by determining the remaining duration from the last-counted signal to generation of the injection or TDC signal as a fraction of the crank angle signal interval. Measurement of the injection period starts from an injection start time at which the level of the injection signal exceeds a criterion value, and ends upon an injection end time at which the level falls below the criterion value.
