A target for ultraviolet light generation comprises a substrate adapted to transmit ultraviolet light therethrough and a light-emitting layer, disposed on the substrate, for generating ultraviolet light in response to an electron beam. The light-emitting layer includes a powdery or granular oxide crystal containing Lu and Si doped with an activator (e.g., Pr:LPS and Pr:LSO crystals).

A target for ultraviolet light generation comprises a substrate adapted to transmit ultraviolet light therethrough and a light-emitting layer disposed on the substrate and generating ultraviolet light UV in response to an electron beam. The light-emitting layer includes a powdery or granular rare-earth-containing aluminum garnet crystal doped with an activator. The light-emitting layer has an ultraviolet light emission peak wavelength of 300 nm or shorter.

An ultraviolet light generating targetincludes a substratemade of sapphire, quartz, or rock crystal; and a light-emitting layerthat is provided on the substrateand that generates ultraviolet light upon receiving an electron beam. The light-emitting layerincludes powdered or granular Pr:LuAG crystals. By using such a light-emitting layeras the target, the ultraviolet light generating efficiency can be increased more remarkably than when a Pr:LuAG single crystal film is used.

A target for ultraviolet light generation comprises a substrate adapted to transmit ultraviolet light therethrough and a light-emitting layer disposed on the substrate and generating ultraviolet light in response to an electron beam. The light-emitting layer includes a polycrystalline film constituted by an oxide polycrystal containing Lu and Si doped with an activator or a polycrystalline film constituted by a rare-earth-containing aluminum garnet polycrystal doped with an activator.

The gas discharge tube in accordance with the present invention comprises at least two electrically conductive aperture members disposed within a thermoelectron transmission path between a cathode and an anode, and an insulator for electrically insulating the electrically conductive aperture members from each other, thereby being able to emit light with a high luminance. Its startability at the time of emitting light can be enhanced in particular when the aperture area of the electrically conductive aperture member on the downstream side in the thermoelectron transmission path is set favorably.

In a gas discharge tubeof the present invention, a focusing electrode portionand a discharge limiting portionare electrically insulated, and the discharge limiting portioncomprises a discharge limiting openingwhich opposes an arc ball shaping concave portion. Thus the formation of a discharge path from a cathode portionto the concave portionis ensured and a starting discharge can be reliably generated. Further, by means of the discharge limiting openingwhich opposes the concave portion, an arc ball S can be continuously maintained in an appropriate shape even when a lamp is illuminated, and thus the arc ball S can be shaped with stability, thereby stabilizing the luminance and light quantity.

A discharge tube for emitting light of the present invention includes an inner bulb including a hollow portion for defining therein an arc discharge chamber which encloses therein gas for emitting light, the inner bulb further including a pair of electrodes and a pair of metal members each of which is connected to a corresponding one of the pair of electrodes, the pair of electrodes being projected in the arc discharge chamber from the inner bulb and the pair of metal members being projected outwardly of the inner bulb, the hollow portion having an outer diameter of a first value and an outer tube for sealingly enclosing therein the inner bulb, the outer tube including a small-diameter portion having an outer diameter of a second value which is equal to or smaller than the first value, wherein the inner bulb is held in the interior of the outer tube, with a gap being formed between an outer surface of the inner bulb and an inner surface of the outer tube, in such a manner that the outer tube supports the metal members projected outwardly of the inner bulb.

A gas discharge tube having an outer envelope in which deuterium gas is filled. In the envelope, an anode, a cathode and a first shield cover for surrounding these electrodes are disposed. A second shield cover is disposed within the first shield cover and at a position adjacent the anode to divide an internal space defined by the first shield cover into a first chamber in which the anode is positioned and a second chamber in which a cathode is positioned. A plasma arc generating portion is positioned at the second shield cover. A plasma arc generated on the plasma arc generating portion provides an optical axis extending linearly toward the outer envelope through an opening of the first shield cover.
