There is prepared a printing plate on which a material being hydrophilic due to light energy at a first temperature and being hydrophobic at a second temperature due to heat energy which is lower than the first temperature is provided. First, the whole surface of the printing plate is forcibly made either one of hydrophobic or hydrophilic. Next, a region having the other nature out of hydrophobic and hydrophilic is formed so as to correspond to an image to be printed. Then, ink is supplied onto the region having hydrophobic nature to conduct offset printing.

A plate material the surface of which is formed of film including as its major component a material whose surface changes from a lipophilic state to a hydrophilic state by a photocatalytic reaction and returns to a lipophilic state when subsequently subjected to a heat treatment is used for making a printing plate. The substantially entire surface of the plate material is uniformly exposed to active light and an image is written in a heat mode on the surface of the plate material, which has been exposed to the active light.

A plate material the surface of which is formed of film including as its major component a material whose surface changes from a lipophilic state to a hydrophilic state by a photocatalytic reaction and returns to a lipophilic state when subsequently subjected to a heat treatment is used for making a printing plate. The plate material is exposed to active light over the substantially entire surface thereof with image-wise part kept unexposed. The part exposed to the active light becomes hydrophilic and repels ink while the part unexposed to the active light is kept lipophilic and receives ink. When the plate material is subsequently heated, the hydrophilic part is rendered lipophilic and the plate material can be reused.

A laser-diode-pumped solid-state laser including a solid-state laser rod doped with a rare-earth material such as neodymium, a semiconductor laser for emitting a laser beam to pump said solid-state laser rod to oscillate a beam, and a resonator including a bulk single crystal of organic nonlinear optical material for converting the wavelength of the beam which is oscillated by said solid-state laser rod. The organic nonlinear optical material is preferably PRA, MNA, NPP, NPAN, MAP, m-NA, or the like. The semiconductor laser may comprise a single-transverse-mode, or a single-longitudinal-mode semiconductor laser.

Laser-diode-pumped solid-state laser

A fundamental wave is caused to enter a Cerenkov-radiation type optical wavelength converter device which is formed of a single-crystal organic nonlinear optical material of an orthorhombic system of mm2 point group disposed in a cladding as a waveguide and a wavelength-converted wave such as a second harmonic whose wavelength within the range of 430 to 500 nm is extracted. The wavelength of the fundamental wave is selected so that the wavelength of the wavelength-converted wave becomes longer than the absorption edge of the organic nonlinear optical material by at least 30 nm. The fundamental wave is linearly polarized in the direction of the x-optic-axis or the y-optic-axis of the crystal of the organic nonlinear optical material and then caused to enter the optical wavelength converter device, and a wavelength-converted wave which is linearly polarized in the z-optic-axis of the crystal is extracted.

Optical wavelength converting method

An optical wavelength converter device of the optical fiber type comprises a core made of a nonlinear optical material and cladding of an amorphous material and surrounding the core, the cladding having a refractive index lower than the refractive index of the core. Another optical wavelength converter device comprises a two- or three-dimensional optical wavelength converter device produced by growing a nonlinear optical material crystal as an optical waveguide on or in an amorphous substrate having a refractive index lower than the refractive index of the nonlinear optical material crystal. Phase matching is achieved between a radiation mode of a wavelength-converted wave in the cladding or the substrate and a nonlinear polarized wave generated by a waveguide mode of first and second fundamental waves in the core or the optical waveguide.

Optical wavelength converter device

An optical wavelength converter device of the optical fiber type includes a core made of a nonlinear optical material and cladding surrounding the core for converting a wave having a fundamental frequency, which wave is applied to an end of the core, to its second harmonic and radiating the second harmonic into the cladding in such a way as to eliminate interference between the waves traveling in a guided mode in which the fundamental is guided through the core and the waves traveling in a radiation mode in which the second harmonic is radiated into the cladding. The cladding has a diameter of at least 500 .mu.m.

A bulk crystal type optical wavelength converter device is made of a monocrystalline nonlinear optical material (3,5-dimethyl-1-(4-nitrophenyl)pyrazole, referred to as PRA). A linearly polarized fundamental having a wavelength ranging from 900 to 4000 nm is applied to the bulk monocrystalline nonlinear optical material to achieve angular phase matching of the type I for obtaining a second harmonic of the fundamental. An optical wavelength converter module comprises a fiber type optical wavelength converter device and a light source device. The optical wavelength converter device includes a core made of a monocrystal of the PRA which has a crystal orientation such that the c-axis thereof extends substantially along the axis of the core. The light source device applies, to the optical wavelength converter device, a fundamental which is linearly polarized in the direction of the a-axis or b-axis of the crystal which is normal to the c-axis.

Optical wavelength conversion method and optical wavelength converter

An optical wavelength converter module comprises a fiber type optical wavelength converter device and a light source device. The optical wavelength converter device includes a core made of a monocrystalline nonlinear optical material (3,5-dimethyl-1-(4-nitrophenyl)-1,2,4-triazole). The optical material has a crystal oriented such that the b-axis thereof extends substantially along the axis of said core. The light source device applies, to the optical wavelength converter device, a fundamental which is linearly polarized in the direction of the a-axis or c-axis of said crystal which is normal to the b-axis.

Optical wavelength converter module

An optical wavelength converter device has a waveguide of a nonlinear optical material disposed in cladding and having a refractive index lower than the refractive index of the cladding for converting a fundamental guided through the waveguide into a second or third harmonic and radiating the second or third harmonic into the cladding. The nonlinear optical material comprises an organic nonlinear optical material having a maximum light absorption coefficient at a wavelength close to the wavelength of at least one of the fundamental and the second harmonic.
