A method can include receiving neutron data and density data for a borehole in a geologic formation; determining a migration length value for a layer of the geologic formation based at least in part on the neutron data; forward modeling at least the layer based at least in part on the migration length value and the density data; and outputting, based at least in part on the forward modeling, modeled neutron data for the layer.

A method includes receiving information for a subsurface region; based at least in part on the information, identifying sub-regions within the subsurface region; assigning individual identified sub-regions a dimensionality of a plurality of different dimensionalities that correspond to a plurality of different models; via a model-based computational framework, generating at least one result for at least one of the individual identified sub-regions based at least in part on at least one assigned dimensionality; and consolidating the at least one result for multiple sub-regions.

Earth model generation via measurements

Properties of a geological formation, such as vertical resistivity values, horizontal resistivity values, dip, and azimuth may be determined by inverting electromagnetic (EM) well log data based at least in part on an anisotropic formation model and a cost function. The cost function may include a data misfit term, a smoothness term, and an entropy term. In some embodiments, one or more of the data misfit term, the smoothness term, and the entropy term may be represented as functions of vertical conductivity and horizontal conductivity. The cost function may include one or more regularization parameters that are based at least in part on the data misfit term. Further, the cost function may include one or more relaxation factors that are based at least in part on a ratio of the Hessians of the smoothness term and the data misfit term.

Determining anisotropic subsurface properties with electromagnetic measurements

A method, apparatus, and program product utilize a buffer defined relative to a wellbore trajectory to generate a work zone around a wellbore for use in connection with formation modeling. In some embodiments, for example, a closed curve such as a non-rectangular, polygonal work zone may be defined around a wellbore based upon a buffer that extends generally transverse to the trajectory of a length of a wellbore a predetermined distance. In addition, boundaries may be defined in a work zone to effectively split the work zone into multiple closed curves or polygons in response to user editing, e.g., to create one or more subsurface layers in the work zone. In such instances, points defining a subsurface layer may be shared by adjacent layers such that editing of such points will affect each of the layers sharing such points.

Local layer geometry engine with work zone generated from buffer defined relative to a wellbore trajectory

A method for automatic interpretation of bulls-eye and sinusoidal features observed in LWD images is disclosed. In some embodiments, the method includes an automatic workflow for extracting smooth contours from images that demarcate boundaries of structural features, followed by projection of the contours to three-dimensional (3D) point clouds in the well coordinate system for structural interpretation. The method may characterize both sinusoidal features and bulls-eye features, taking into account variations of formation dip/azimuth, or well inclination/azimuth, on the topology of a structural feature. The disclosed method may be sufficiently fast for use in real-time analysis and interpretation, or to provide constraints for physics-based data inversion processing.

Automatic method for three-dimensional structural interpretation of borehole images acquired in high-angle and horizontal wells

A method for transforming a 2D or 3D earth volume geometry into a 1D earth volume geometry includes performing a measurement using the measurement sensor in a wellbore. A layer boundary in the 2D or 3D earth volume geometry that is nearest to the measurement sensor is identified. A vector from the measurement sensor is generated toward the nearest layer boundary. A first intersection is identified between the vector and the nearest layer boundary, and a second intersection is identified between the vector and another layer boundary. Simulated boundaries that extend through the first and second intersections and are perpendicular to the vector are generated. The 1D earth volume geometry that is bounded by the first and second intersections is identified. A property value is extracted from the 2D or 3D earth volume geometry between the first and second intersections. The property value is assigned to the 1D earth geometry.

Method for determining petrophysical properties from logging measurements

Methods, computer-readable media, and systems are disclosed for applying 1D processing in a non-1D formation. In some embodiments, a 3D model or curtain section of a subsurface earth formation may be obtained. A processing window within the 3D model or curtain that is suitable for 1D inversion processing is determined, and a local 1D model for the processing window is built. A 1D inversion is performed on the local 1D model, and inverted formation parameters are used to update the 3D model or curtain section.

Methods, computer-readable media, and systems for applying 1-dimensional (1D) processing in a non-1D formation

Embodiments set forth in this disclosure providing techniques for determining formation parameters, such as horizontal resistivity (Rh), vertical resistivity (Rv), and dip, in high angle and horizontal wells using non-directional resistivity measurements. For example, a method is provided that may include using an electromagnetic logging tool to acquire non-directional resistivity measurements in a wellbore of a high angle or horizontal well. The method may also include defining a processing window that corresponds to a measurement point of the electromagnetic logging tool along a well trajectory that intersects a at least one bed boundary between two layers of a subsurface formation. The method may also include defining a formation structure and defining an initial set of formation parameters for each layer in the formation structure. Furthermore, the method may include inverting the formation parameters for each layer.

Method and apparatus for determining formation properties using non-directional electromagnetic measurements in high angle or horizontal wells

An interactive display of results obtained from the inversion of logging data is produced by obtaining and inverting the logging data using a Monte-Carlo inversion. An interactive plot having a percentile scale plotted against a location parameter is produced and a particular percentile is selected using the interactive plot. A cross-section plot for the particular percentile using the results of the Monte-Carlo inversion is produced. The particular percentile can be a curve representing a best-fit solution or a polyline representing selected solutions. Background color/shading can be displayed on the interactive plot to indicate user-defined constraints have been applied. Uncertain features can be plotted on a corresponding cross-section display using fading. Clusters of solutions that are substantially equally likely, given the measurements at a particular drill location, can be identified and plotted. A cross-section constructed from the layered models belonging to a particular cluster can be overlaid on another cross-section.

Interactive display of results obtained from the inversion of logging data

A method for visualizing parametric logging data includes interpreting logging data sets, each logging data set corresponding to a distinct value of a progression parameter, calculating a geometric image including a representation of data from each of the logging data sets corresponding to a wellbore measured depth, and displaying the geometric image(s) at a position along a well trajectory corresponding to the wellbore measured depth. The progression parameter includes time, a resistivity measurement depth, differing tool modes that are sampling different volumes of investigation, and/or sampling different physical properties. The geometric images include a number of parallel lines having lengths determined according to the logging data and/or an azimuthal projection of the logging data, a number of concentric axial projections, and/or shapelets determined from parallel lines and/or concentric axial projections. The method includes dynamically determining a selected measured depth, measured depth interval, and/or azimuthal projection angle.

Method and apparatus for visualizing multi-dimensional well logging data with shapelets

A method for processing well logging data includes method dividing the well logging data into a number of constant dimensional effect segments, where each constant dimensional effect segment defines an interval having a similar dimensional effect on the log response. The well logging data is taken from a highly deviated well. The method further includes dividing the constant dimensional effect segments into a number of constant property intervals, each constant dimensional effect segment including at least one corresponding constant property interval, and each constant property interval defining a wellbore distance over which a formation property is substantially constant that results in a log response having a low variance. The method further includes providing the constant property intervals to an output device. The method further includes determining constant property intervals in 3D volume space projected them into true stratigraphic thickness, and providing the resulting log-squared data to the output device.

Log processing in highly deviated wellbores

Method and system for visualizing one or more properties of a subterranean earth formation while drilling a borehole using probability information from a modeling process. Probability waveforms based on information from a plurality of borehole stations may be plotted, either alone or superimposed onto other graphical representations, to provide a visual display that is easily interpreted by a user to make geosteering decisions. The probability waveforms include peaked sections that are proportional to the amount of uncertainty or error associated with a boundary estimate at a particular distance from an axis of the borehole. By providing a visual display of the uncertainty, a user can make better geosteering decisions.
