The first cell part is configured to selectively detect a concentration of NOor ammonia contained in measured gas in the measured gas chamber. The second cell part is configured to discharge oxygen contained in measured gas in the measured gas chamber and convert NOand ammonia contained in measured gas in the measured gas chamber to NO. The third cell part is configured to detect a concentration of NO contained in measured gas in the measured gas chamber.

Multiple gas detection device

In a limited-current type gas sensor which detects oxygen-containing gas contained in an exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine, the decomposition current value of water (HO) may be detected, and existence of an abnormality of output characteristics of the sensor may be diagnosed based on its deviation from a reference decomposition current value of water corresponding to the concentration of water contained in the exhaust gas. A NOx sensor and a SOx sensor can also diagnose remarkable and minute abnormalities of output characteristics. In addition, the reference decomposition current value of water may be acquired based on the concentration of water detected by a separate humidity sensor or the decomposition current value of oxygen detected by the limited-current type gas sensor. The reference decomposition current value of water may be corrected based on a decomposition current value of oxygen detected during a fuel cut.

Abnormality diagnosis system of a gas sensor

A control device of an exhaust sensor comprises a battery voltage detection part detecting a voltage of a battery, and a heater control part setting a target temperature of an electrochemical cell and controlling the electric power supplied from the battery to a heater. The heater control part sets the target temperature to a first temperature after startup of the internal combustion engine until the voltage of the battery recovers to a predetermined voltage, and switches the target temperature from the first temperature to a second temperature when the voltage of the battery recovers to the predetermined voltage. The first temperature is a temperature lower than an operating temperature of the electrochemical cell and at least a lowest temperature at which a Leidenfrost phenomenon occurs at the protective layer. The second temperature is a temperature of the operating temperature or more.

Downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor signal based adaptive air-fuel ratio control. When the air-fuel ratio detected by the downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor is maintained lean unduly, a stuck learning control is performed to decrease a learning value to lower the air-fuel ratio. Adaptive learning value update control is performed based on the downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor signal to increase the learning value when an upstream air-fuel ratio deviates to the rich side and to decrease the learning value when the upstream air-fuel ratio deviates to the lean side. It is judged that the downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor is abnormal when a certain value or more of decrease of the learning value and a certain value or more of increase of the learning value are repeated.

Method of detecting abnormality of air-fuel ratio sensor

A control device for an internal combustion engine comprises an air-fuel ratio control part configured to control the air-fuel ratio of the exhaust gas and a heating control part configured to control the heating of the air-fuel ratio sensors. The heating control part controls the sensor heaters so that the temperature of the upstream air-fuel ratio sensor becomes less than the activation temperature and so that the temperature of the downstream air-fuel ratio sensor becomes the activation temperature or more while the internal combustion engine is stopped by the automatic stop function. The air-fuel ratio control part controls the exhaust air-fuel ratio based on the outputs of the two air-fuel ratio sensors during engine operation and control the air-fuel ratio temporarily based on only the output of the downstream air-fuel ratio sensor after the internal combustion engine has been restarted after automatic stop.

Control device for internal combustion engine

An automatically stoppable internal combustion engine comprises an exhaust purification catalyst, an upstream side air-fuel ratio sensor, a downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor, and sensor heaters heating air-fuel ratio sensors. A controller comprises an air-fuel ratio control part and a heating control part. The heating control part controls the temperature of the upstream side air-fuel ratio sensor to the activation temperature or more and the temperature of the downstream side air-fuel ratio sensor to less than the activation temperature during automatic stop of the internal combustion engine. An abnormality diagnosis system of limit current type air-fuel ratio sensors comprises a current detecting part and a sensor temperature control device. The abnormality diagnosis system uses the current detecting part to detect the output current of the air-fuel ratio sensor when the air-fuel ratio is made the rich air-fuel ratio in the state where temperature of the air-fuel ratio is made the first temperature and when the air-fuel ratio is made the rich air-fuel ratio in the state where the temperature of the air-fuel ratio is made a second temperature higher than the first temperature. It is judged that the air-fuel ratio sensor is abnormal if the output current when the temperature of the air-fuel ratio sensor is the first temperature is larger than the output current when it is the second temperature by a predetermined value or more.

Abnormality diagnosis system of air-fuel ratio sensor

In automatic stopping of the internal combustion engine, an electronic control unit controls a heater so that an element temperature of the air-fuel ratio sensor becomes a first temperature. The first temperature is a temperature that is below an activation temperature range in which the air-fuel ratio sensor is activated, and is also below a desorption temperature range in which HC components adsorbed on the air-fuel ratio sensor desorb therefrom. In a case where, after the element temperature of the air-fuel ratio sensor becomes the first temperature, it is estimated that the amount of HC components adsorbed on the air-fuel ratio sensor increases to exceed a first predetermined amount, the electronic control unit controls the heater so that the element temperature of the air-fuel ratio sensor becomes a second temperature. The second temperature is a temperature included in the desorption temperature range.

Method and apparatus for controlling internal combustion engine

When the operating characteristics of an intake valve are changed by an intake valve stop mechanism, an ECU outputs a command signal (control on) to a solenoid. At this time, a timing, at which the command signal is output to the solenoid, is determined on the basis of a rotational position of a crankshaft, calculated from a signal of a crank position sensor. However, the output timing is corrected on the basis of a rotational phase difference of a camshaft with respect to the crankshaft.

The state determining section determines, to which of at least three states including: (a) a stable state in which a fluctuating state of a sub-feedback learning value is stable; (b) an unstable state in which the fluctuating state greatly fluctuates; and (c) an intermediate state between the stable state and the instable state (may be referred to as sub-stable state), the fluctuating state corresponds. The learning update-speed setting section sets an update speed of the sub-feedback learning value in accordance with the result of determination by the state determining section. Further, the learning update-speed setting section suppresses the occurrence of hunting of the sub-feedback learning value.

The method then includes the steps of controlling the upstream-of-catalyst air-fuel ratio to a first lean air-fuel ratio until an output of a downstream-of-first-catalyst sensor indicates a lean air-fuel ratio, and then to a second lean air-fuel ratio and that has a value that is determined in accordance with an oxidizing-reducing capability index value, until a time point when an output of a downstream-of-second-catalyst air-fuel ratio sensor indicates an air-fuel ratio that is lean.
