An improved method and system for capturing and displaying a series of successive video images using at least first and second different exposure times, so that first video images captured using said first exposure time occur alternately in said series with second video images captured using said second exposure time. The method employs a digital computer and a software program for generating and storing digital data representative of said first and second video images, and utilizing that digital data to selectively display (a) side-by-side reproductions of said first and second images or (b) reproductions of only said first or said second video images or (c) composite images derived from the first and second video images digital data.

Dynamic range video recording and playback system and method

The invention provides for capturing and displaying video images by (1) creating a video signal comprising a succession of video fields or frames containing optical image video data representing the captured optical image, with a plurality of first video fields or frames representing the optical image at a first exposure level and a plurality of second video fields or frames representing the optical image at a second exposure level different from the first exposure level, with the first field or frames being interspersed among said second fields or frames, and (2) utilizing that video signal to (a) generate a video display of the image represented by said first video fields or frames or the image represented by said second video fields or frames, or (b) concurrently generate a first video display of the image represented by said first video fields or frames and a second video display of the image represented by said second video fields or frames. In addition to, or instead of, using the video signal output to generate a video display in real time, the invention provides for recording the video signal output of the camera, and subsequently using the recorded video signal to generate video displays of the optical image represented by said first or second fields or frames consisting of the optical image data represented by said first or second video fields or frames.

A position-indicating video display system is provided for an endoscope of the type having an objective lens, a movable zoom lens, a movable solid state imaging device for picking up the image formed by said objective lens and transferred by said zoom lens, means for generating a visual display of the image seen by the objective lens, and control means for moving the zoom lens and the imaging device so as to assure that for each position occupied by the zoom lens the imaging device is positioned so that the its image-receiving surface is in the focal plane of the zoom lens. The position-indicating video display system comprises means for generating first and second movable markers indicative of the instantaneous positions of the zoom lens and the solid state imaging device along the optical axis, and additional limit markers indicative of the maximum and minimum limits of the travel paths of the zoom lens and the solid state imaging device.

A method and apparatus are provided for correcting for optical misalignment of the dual (left and right) images produced by a stereo electronic endoscope, or of the corresponding dual images produced by coupling electronic imaging devices to each of two monocular teaching ports of a stereo optical endoscope. The stereo image alignment technique comprises electronically capturing the video image data of the dual images, and subsequently processing that data electronically to correct for optical alignment errors. The method involves digitizing the electronic data and digitally performing the equivalent of vertical image shift, and/or image size change, and/or image rotation as required to correct for any visual image misalignment.

Method and apparatus for aligning stereo images

An endoscope is provided that comprises an imaging device such as a micro-size video camera supported by a novel device-steering shaft assembly. The shaft assembly comprises a malleable or rigid shaft, an imaging device carrier releasably and pivotally supporting the imaging device at one end of the shaft, and operating means including a flexible operating cable and cable moving means attached to the opposite end of the shaft for moving said cable and thereby pivoting the imaging device carrier relative to the shaft so as to alter the viewing angle of the supported imaging device. Using a malleable shaft offers the advantage that the shaft is manually reformable into various configurations to facilitate access to different surgical sites, with the shaft having the ability to remain in each selected configuration until manually reformed into another configuration. Alternatively, the imaging device may be permanently attached to the device carrier. A routing configuration for the cable permits the imaging device to be rotated sufficiently to attain retrograde viewing. The endoscope may be converted to another instrument by replacing the imaging device on the device carrier with some other device such as a surgical laser, a magnetic sensor, an infra-red or other radiation sensor, an infra-red or other radiation transmitter, an ultrasonic transducer, or other surgical device such as a surgical scissors or a grasper.

Head mounted display

An endoscope is provided that comprises a micro-size video camera, a flexible cable attached to the camera comprising fiber optical means for transmitting light to illuminate the site viewed by the camera and electrical conductors for transmitting electronic signals generated by the camera in response to images viewed by the camera, and a malleable or rigid shaft detachably connected to and supporting said camera and said cable. The rigid shaft may be straight or may be preformed in a selected curved configuration. In an alternative embodiment of the invention, a malleable shaft is permanently attached to said camera. Using a malleable shaft offers the advantage that the shaft is manually manipulable into various configurations to facilitate access to different surgical sites, with the shaft having the ability to remain in each selected configuration until manually reformed into another configuration. Using a detachable shaft provides the advantage that different shafts may be used with the same camera to provide different endoscope configurations for different applications.

Endoscopic video camera with malleable support

A device carries first and second units in aligned end-to-end disposition at a distal end of a shaft and provides structure for moving the second of the units into position alongside the first of the units. The device comprises a base portion to which a proximal end of the shaft is fixed, the first unit being fixed to a distal end of the shaft. A rod extends lengthwise through the shaft and a portion of the first unit, and is off-set from an axis of the shaft and fixed to the second unit removed from an axis of the second unit. Mounted on the base portion is an operating mechanism for effecting rotational movement of the rod to effect rotational movement of the second unit to a position removed from alignment with the first unit, and for effecting axial movement of the rod to effect axial movement of the second unit into the position alongside the first unit, said operating mechanism comprising a gear clutch mechanism for shifting movement of said rod from a rotational mode to an axial translational mode, and back again to said rotational mode.

An endoscope includes a hollow tube having a proximal end and a distal end, a window disposed in an aperture of the distal end of the tube, a lens disposed proximate the window in the distal end of the tube and a photodetector disposed proximate the objective lens in the distal end of the tube.

A device carries first and second units in aligned end-to-end disposition at a distal end of a shaft and provides structure for moving the second of the units into position alongside the first of the units. The device comprises a base portion to which a proximal end of the shaft is fixed, the first unit being fixed to the distal end of the shaft. A rod extends lengthwise through the shaft and a portion of the first unit, and is off-set from an axis of the shaft and fixed to the second unit removed from an axis of the second unit. Mounted on the base portion is structure for effecting rotational movement of the rod to effect rotational movement of the second unit to a position removed from alignment with the first unit, and for effecting axial movement of the rod to effect axial movement of the second unit into the position alongside the first unit.

A surgical retractor assembly includes an elongated base bar, a first leg extending from the base bar and substantially normal thereto, a first gripper disposed on the first leg, a second leg mounted at a proximal end thereof on the base bar and extending parallel to the first leg, the second leg proximal end being coupled to and movable along the base bar, and a second rib gripper disposed on the second leg. A U-shaped flexible rail is mounted proximate first and second ends thereof, respectively, on the first and second legs, with a bend portion of the rail extending proximate the base bar. An accessory support member is mounted on the rail and is slidably movable thereon, the accessory support member being adapted to retain an accessory device such that an operative end of the accessory device is disposed generally between the first and second legs.

An endoscope for stereo-optically viewing an object comprises a tubular insertion portion characterized by a pair of adjacent asymmetric optical systems including a primary imaging channel and a secondary imaging channel. Associated with each channel is a solid state electronic imaging means positioned to receive the images relayed by primary and secondary image-relaying means. The optical portion of the primary channel comprises a relatively large objective lens system and a primary image-relaying means designed to provide sharply focussed first images. The optical portion of the secondary channel comprises a relatively small diameter objective lens system and a secondary image-relaying means designed to relay enough light and image information to provide an acceptable stereoscopic capability.

Asymmetric stereo-optic endoscope

An endoscope having an objective lens, a zoom lens, a solid state imaging device for picking up the image formed by said objective lens and transferred by said zoom lens, and control means for moving the zoom lens and the imaging device so as to assure that for each position occupied by the zoom lens the imaging device is positioned so that the its image-receiving surface is in the focal plane of the zoom lens. The endoscope also comprises first and second motion-transmitting means for moving said zoom lens and said imaging device respectively along the optical axis of said objective lens, whereby the axial spacing between said zoom lens and said objective lens and also the axial spacing between said imaging device and said objective lens may be changed, and manually operable switch means for controlling movement of the zoom lens and the imaging device by said first and second motion transmitting means. The control means also comprises means for sensing the position of said zoom lens and said imaging device along the optical axis of the endoscope, a lookup table containing data as to the spacing required to be maintained between said imaging device and said zoom lens in order for the focal plane of said zoom lens to be located substantially at the image-receiving surface of said imaging device for various positions of said zoom lens system, means for accessing said data, and means for moving said zoom lens system and/or said imaging device in accordance with the accessed data.
