The present invention provides a heat-sensitive recording body that is excellent in high-speed recording properties, that makes it possible to perform high-quality image recording with a high sensitivity even at a low thermal energy, and that is excellent in printability and economy. A heat-sensitive recording body containing a support, an intermediate layer, and a heat-sensitive color forming layer comprising as main components a leuco dye and a developer, the intermediate layer and the heat-sensitive color forming layer stacked on the support in the order as mentioned, wherein the intermediate layer contains a hollow particle containing a hollow core portion formed by drying a solvent for an alkali-swellable aqueous gel comprising a (meth)acrylic-based copolymer having an acid value of 200 to 400 mgKOH/g, and a resin portion encapsulating the core portion and having a non-alkali-swellable outermost layer of the particle, the non-alkali-swellable outermost layer formed using a hydrophobic monomer, and the hollow particle has an average particle diameter of 1.5 to 3.5 &#x3bc;m and a percentage of hollowness of 60 to 85%.

In order to emphasize saturation without causing color compression, a saturation correction curve is determined such that color difference data relating to one pixel is not corrected when it represents maximum saturation or minimum saturation which saturation data relating to the one pixel can take, while being corrected when it represents intermediate saturation between the maximum saturation and the minimum saturation. Even if the saturation of color difference data Cb and Cr is corrected, it is possible to prevent color compression from occurring by the saturation of the color difference data Cb and Cr whose saturation has been corrected.

Luminance levels of an analog or digital image signal entered from outside are detected as a luminance histogram. Based on the luminance histogram, a black luminance level and a white luminance level are determined, and are assigned respectively to a darkest tonal level and a lightest tonal level of a gradation range available for printing. To those pixels having luminance levels between the black and white levels, tonal levels between the darkest and lightest tonal levels are assigned according to a gradation conversion curve. The gradation conversion curve is selected among from a plurality of predetermined conversion curves depending upon a scene discrimination coefficient. The scene discrimination coefficient is calculated by multiplying the frequency of each luminance level shown in the luminance histogram with a different luminance coefficient predetermined according to the luminance level, and accumulating multiplication results of all the luminance levels.
