Methods for reducing the size of an oil slick on a water surface or on a water surface when ice is present are described. Spreading of oil can be reversed by reducing the surface tension of the seawater, for example, by using a low concentration of at least one water-soluble surfactant, such as a non-ionic surfactant. A controlled amount of the surfactant or surfactant mixture may be discharged over time at the inner-wall of a spill control boom surrounding the oil spill, or within the vicinity of the oil spill in the absence of control booms using a soaker hose or a floating polyethylene or polypropylene hose impregnated with surfactant, whereby the confinement and contraction of the oil slick is maintained by compensating for dissolved surfactant and surfactant moving away from the oil slick. Water-soluble surfactants are typically solids or gels at low temperatures when no organic co-solvent is added to the surfactant. The solid or gel form is advantageous for generating slow, but continuous release of surfactant, and thus there is no need for an organic co-solvent. This is not the situation for oil-soluble surfactants, which require an organic co-solvent to be successfully applied at low temperatures. Mixing oil-soluble surfactants with water-soluble surfactants may overcome the problem of dispersing oil-soluble surfactant without an organic co-solvent at low temperatures.

Contraction and confinement of oil slicks on water, including water where ice is present, using non-ionic surfactants

A method for retracting oil on a water surface, and a method for reducing the quantity of oil on an oil control boom are described. Spreading of oil can be reversed by reducing the surface tension of the seawater, for example by using a low concentration of a water-soluble surfactant, such as a non-ionic surfactant. A controlled amount of the surfactant may be continuously discharged at the inner-wall of a spill control boom surrounding the oil spill. The spilled oil is caused to retract away from the boom toward the center of the area encircled thereby, such that the oil layer becomes sufficiently thick to be more effectively removed mechanically. The surfactant also reduces the amount of oil on the spill control boom, whereby the boom can easily be removed from a remediated oil spill and reused at a later date without further cleaning.

Retraction of oil slicks using surfactants

Co-agglomerated dispersions and methods for their preparation are described herein. The co-agglomerated dispersions are prepared by co-agglomerating an anionic polymer dispersion and inert particles. The polymers for use in the co-agglomerated dispersions are derived from one or more monomers including at least one conjugated diene monomer. The inert particles have a particle size of less than 2 &#x3bc;m. Also described herein is an aqueous dispersion including co-agglomerated particles formed from at least one polymer and at least one inert material. Further described herein are foamed polymers, latex-based adhesives, waterproofing membranes, sound absorbing coatings, and methods for their preparation and use.

Co-agglomerated latex polymer dispersions and methods of preparing and using same

The invention is a method of producing an essentially electrically neutral polymer dispersion, comprising a polymerizing one or more monomers in the presence of a nonionic surfactant, wherein the polymerization preferably occurs in the absence of ionic surfactants. The invention also includes methods of producing positively or negatively charged polymer dispersions comprising producing the essentially nonionic polymer dispersion and further adding a cationically-charged or anionically-charged surfactant or electrolyte. The invention further includes dispersions produced by the methods of the invention and polymer films and powders produced from these dispersions.

Electrically neutral dispersions and method of preparing same

The invention is a method of treating, restoring or sealing a surface comprising applying an emulsion comprising a latex polymer, a cationic emulsifier, and optionally a recycling agent to the surface to wet the surface and depositing a surface treatment layer on the surface, wherein the depositing step occurs while the surface is wetted. The invention also includes a surface pretreatment composition comprising water, at least one acrylic latex polymer, an aromatic recycling agent, and at least one cationic emulsifier. Furthermore, the invention includes the surface resulting from the application of the emulsion used in the invention and concentrated emulsions for use with the surface treatment composition.

Method and composition for enhancing the performance of an emulsion-based surface treatment

A composition for rejuvenating asphalt pavement according to the present invention comprises an asphalt binder, water, a cationic surfactant, a recycling agent, and a cationic, co-agglomerated styrene butadiene rubber latex, which includes sulfur and a vulcanizing agent. The composition is also useful as a scrub seal, fog seal, sand seal as well as for crack filling and the prevention of reflective cracking. The inventive composition may be used in emulsions with different setup times. The invention also includes a method for treatment of aged and cracked asphalt by application of the disclosed compositions.

A method of forming a composition comprising adding at least one first compound that is at least one of an alkali metal salt, an ammonium salt, an alkali metal hydroxide, or an ammonium hydroxide and at least one second compound that is at least one of a Group IIA salt, a Group IIIA salt, a Group IIIB salt, a copper salt, a zinc salt, a cadmium salt, a manganese salt, an iron salt, a cobalt salt, or a nickel salt to a latex. This method allows for the formation of nanoparticles in the composition.

Asphalt-based formulations and method of making and using the same for paving and coating applications

The present invention is a method of incorporating a water insoluble organic chemical into a styrene-butadiene rubber latex dispersion and the resulting styrene-butadiene rubber latex dispersion. A styrene-butadiene rubber latex dispersion is provided comprising an aqueous phase and a disperse phase, with the disperse phase including particles of styrene-butadiene rubber. An organic solvent that is miscible in water and the water insoluble organic chemical are added together to the styrene-butadiene rubber latex dispersion. The addition of the water-miscible organic solvent allows the water insoluble organic chemical to pass from the aqueous phase into the disperse phase thus limiting separation of the water insoluble organic chemical from the latex dispersion. The resulting SBR latex has increased properties over conventional latices that use the same amount of the water insoluble organic chemical but that do not include the water-miscible organic solvent.

Method of adding water insoluble organic chemicals to styrene-butadiene rubber latex dispersions and resulting styrene-butadiene rubber latex dispersions

The present invention relates to the coagglomeration of random vinyl substituted aromatic/C -C conjugated diolefin polymers With sulfur. Said coagglomerate is storage stable and easily blended with asphalt under a variety of mixing conditions. Further, polymer/asphalt blends prepared with the sulfur coagglomerated polymers show improved storage stability against phase separation.

The present invention relates to the coagglomeration of random vinyl substituted aromatic/C,-C,conjugated diolefin polymers with sulfur. Said coagglomerate is storage stable and easily blended with asphalt under a variety of mixing conditions. Further, polymer/asphalt blends prepared with the sulfur coagglomerated polymers show improved storage stability against phase separation.
