A honeycomb filter includes a pillar-shaped honeycomb structure body having a porous partition wall disposed, surrounding a plurality of cells which serve as fluid through channels extending from a first end face to a second end face; and a plugging portion provided at an open end on the first end face side or the second end face side of each of the cells, wherein the partition wall is composed of a material containing cordierite as a main component thereof, an average pore diameter of the partition wall is 20 to 30 μm, an average equivalent circle diameter of pores existing at a surface of the partition wall and having equivalent circle diameters exceeding 3.0 μm is 18 to 30 μm, and a number per unit area of pores existing at a surface of the partition wall and having equivalent circle diameters exceeding 3.0 μm is 400 per mmor more.

A method for manufacturing a pillar-shaped honeycomb structure filter including preparing a pillar-shaped honeycomb structure having a plurality of first cells and a plurality of second cells that are alternately arranged adjacent to each other with a porous partition wall interposed therebetween; adhering ceramic particles containing 50% by mass or more in total of one or two selected from SiC and SiN to a surface of the first cells; and performing a heat-oxidation treatment on the pillar-shaped honeycomb structure in which the ceramic particles are adhered to the surface of the first cells to form a porous film comprised of the ceramic particles having an oxide film thereon so as to satisfy: (1) 0.05&#x2264;T&#x2264;0.5; (2) 0.05&#x2264;T/D50; and (3) 4&#x2264;{(W&#x2212;W)/W&#xd7;100}/D50.

Method for manufacturing pillar-shaped honeycomb structure filter

A pillar-shaped honeycomb structure including a plurality of first cells extending from an inlet side end surface to an outlet side end surface, and a plurality of second cells extending from the inlet side end surface to the outlet side end surface, with a porous partition wall interposed therebetween, wherein a porous film having a porosity higher than that of the partition walls is provided on a surface of each of the first cells, and at a cross-section orthogonal to the direction in which the first cells of the pillar-shaped honeycomb structure filter extend, the average thickness of the porous film in the central portion is larger than the average thickness of the porous film in the outer peripheral portion.

The partition wallsare made of cordierite, and, when an average pore size of the partition wallsis x (&#x3bc;m) while a porosity of the partition wallsis y (%), a relation of x and y is y&#x2266;&#x2212;8.33x+86.66 and satisfies 0.5&#x2266;x&#x2266;5 and 35&#x2266;y&#x2266;70. The honeycomb structurecan improve thermal shock resistance without sacrificing any of light-off performance, catalyst coatability, and strength.

There is disclosed a honeycomb structure onto which a large amount of catalyst can be carried while suppressing an increase in pressure drop. In a honeycomb structure comprising porous partition walls by which a plurality of cells that become through channels of a fluid are partitioned and in which a plurality of pores are formed. In each of the partition walls, pores having pore diameters larger than a thickness of the partition wall in a section thereof which is perpendicular to an extending direction of the cells are formed so as to occupy 4 to 11% of the total volume of the pores formed in the partition walls.

A honeycomb structural body includes porous partition walls arranged to form a plurality of cells which become through channels of a fluid, porosities of the partition walls are from 45 to 70%, a pore diameter distribution of the partition walls is measured by mercury porosimetry, the pore diameter distribution indicates a bimodal distribution, in the bimodal distribution, a pore diameter at the maximum peak value of a small pore side distribution is from 1 to 10 &#x3bc;m, and a pore diameter at the maximum peak value of a large pore side distribution exceeds 10 &#x3bc;m, and a ratio between a pore volume of the small pores and a pore volume of the large pores is in a range of 1:7 to 1:1 in the honeycomb structural body.
