In a digital phase locked loop, a coarse stepsize variable delay line and a fine stepsize variable delay line are connected in series for receiving a reference clock pulse and imparting thereto variable delays in accordance with higher significant bits and lower significant bits. The delayed clock pulse is delivered to the input of a clock tree through which the clock pulse propagates and are supplied to various parts of an integrated circuit chip. A phase detector provides a phase comparison between the reference clock pulse and a delayed clock pulse appearing at one of the outputs of the clock tree. A delay controller counts the reference clock pulse to produce a count value, and increments or decrements the count value in accordance with the output of the phase detector. The up-down count value is supplied as the higher and lower significant bits to the coarse and fine stepsize variable delay lines at such longer intervals than the intervals at which the reference clock pulse occurs, so that the delayed clock pulse is allowed a sufficient time to propagate through the clock tree.

A contact type image sensor including a plurality of photodiodes for converting a light signal into an electric signal according to the intensity of the light and a plurality of blocking diodes, arranged in either a back-to-back or a front-to-front connection with the photodiodes, for functioning as switching elements to have the information stored on the photodiodes read out, and adapted to be driven by a matrix drive system. For a back-to-back connection of the blocking diodes and photodiodes, a control circuit maintains the potential difference between cathodes of the photodiodes at zero volts at all times. Similarly, for a front-to-front connection of the blocking diodes and photodiodes, a control/drive circuit maintains the potential difference between the anodes of the photodiodes at zero volts at all times. Since the potential difference between the cathodes (for the back-to-back connection) or anodes (for the front-to-front connection) of all of the photodiodes is always maintained at zero volts, crosstalk at crossover portions between output lines connected to the photodiodes is reduced.

An image sensor apparatus includes a matrix array of optical/electrical conversion elements, switching elements for taking out electric charge stored on the conversion elements, and drive circuits for driving the switching elements thereby to take out image signals from the conversion elements in parallel. A matrix array of noise signal retaining circuits is provided on output sides of the conversion elements for temporarily retaining in parallel, as noise signals, signals produced while the optical/electrical conversion elements are not being driven. Subtracting circuits are provided for subtracting from the parallel image signals in parallel the noise signals retained in the noise signal retaining circuits. A multiplexer converts the parallel output signals from the subtracting circuits into a serial signal in a predetermined sequence. Thus, the image sensor apparatus temporarily retains in parallel the parallel noise signals produced as a result of fluctuations in the characteristics of circuit elements, and cancels out with the subtracting circuits substantially the same noise which is contained in the image signals output from the conversion elements.

A complete-contact type image sensor includes matrix-driven sensor elements arranged on a light transmitting substrate. Both input contact members connected with the sensor elements at their input side and output contact members connected with the sensor elements at their output side are formed at one same side on the light transmitting substrate. By virtue of this arrangement, the sensor elements and an original are brought into close contact, thereby improving the MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) and reducing the width of the light transmitting substrate.

A photoelectric transducer device including a plurality of sensor elements made up of photodiodes and blocking diodes on a substrate, connected into a linear pattern which extends in a primary scanning direction, the sensor elements to be driven in a suitable sequence to read image data from an original document. Each sensor element include a first lower electrode formed on the substrate, a second lower electrode, formed on the substrate and electrically separated from the first electrode, a photodiode formed on the first electrode, a blocking diode formed on the second electrode for preventing crosstalk, and an upper electrode formed on the photodiode and blocking diode for electrically connecting them. Lead wires for connecting the sensor elements to output circuits extend in the primary scanning direction on the first lower electrodes with an insulating film in between, the first lower electrodes being selectively connected to the lead wires through holes provided in the insulating film.
