When searching a route to a destination, a change point at which the transportation means is changed is set, and then the priority in selecting a transportation means for moving in a section from a plurality kinds of transportation means is set based on at least one of an attribute of a start point and an attribute of an end point in the section for each section where a distance between a departure place and a destination is divided at the change point to search the route to the destination using the transportation means selected for each of the plurality of sections based on the set priority.

A server is connected to a communication terminal and configured to receive a departure point, a destination, and a route retrieval request from the departure point to the destination from the terminal and to deliver a route retrieved in response to the received route retrieval request to the terminal. When the route retrieval request is acquired from the terminal, the server acquires route information related to a target route that is a route corresponding to a predetermined distance from the departure point in a terminal-recommended route that is a route from the departure point to the destination and is retrieved by using terminal-side map information provided in the terminal. The server retrieves a route to the destination that includes at least a part of the target route by using device-side map information provided in the server and the route information, and delivers the retrieved route to the terminal.

A communication terminal is connected to a server device in a bidirectionally communicable manner and configured to transmit a departure point, a destination, and a route retrieval request from the departure point to the destination to the server device and to acquire a route that is retrieved and delivered by the server device in response to the route retrieval request. The communication terminal receives, from the server device, location road information for identifying a position of a moving object on a map and identifying the position of the moving object based on the received location road information. The communication terminal transmits, to the server device, the route retrieval request in which the identified position of the moving object is set as the departure point, and receives, from the server device, a route that is retrieved by the server device in response to the route retrieval request.

At the first data access by a navigation unit to a recording medium that records updating right information necessary for updating map data in a rewritable data area in which map data are recorded, the updating right information is read from the data area and is deleted from the data area, and a map updating due date created based on the read updating right information is written in a memory of the navigation unit together with the medium identification information read from a non-rewritable management area.
