There are disclosed novel compounds, liquid crystal compositions, polymers, optically anisotropic producgs, and optical or liquid crystal elements that have large refractive index anisotropy, mix easily with other liquid crystals, have advantageous stability against light, and exhibit absorption at practically short wavelength in the ultraviolet region. The compounds are represented by the formula (1) and have a phenylacetylene structure, wherein difference &#x394;E in energy of HOMO of parts (1-1), (1-2) and (1-3) calculated by the method of molecular orbitals is not less than 0.3 electronvolt, and the polarizability anisotropy &#x394;&#x3b1; of a molecule represented by the formula (1) calculated in the same way is not lower than 500 A.U.: P&#x2014;H&#x2003;&#x2003;(1-2)P&#x2014;H&#x2003;&#x2003;(1-3)(Ato A: H, F, alkyl or alkoxy group of C1 to C10 optionally substituted with F; P, P: structure fulfilling the conditions of HOMO energy and polarizability).

Provided is a light scattering resin layer providing scattering of a transmitted light by dispersion of an inorganic fine particle in a transparent resin, wherein said fine particle is a polyhedral particle having substantially no fractured surface, L/S ratio is 2.0 or less when the major axis length is represented by L and the minor axis length is represented by S, the number-average particle diameter of said fine particle is 0.1 &mgr;m or more and 20.0 &mgr;m or less, and the particle size distribution in terms of D90/D10 value is 7 or less when particle diameters at 10% cumulation and 90% cumulation from smaller particle side of cumulative particle size distribution are represented by D10 and D90, respectively.
