A biaxially stretched polyester film for forming a container, characterized by being formed of a polyester substantially consisting of an ethylene terephthalate unit and an ethylene naphthalate unit, the refractive index in the direction of thickness of the film being 1.5 or greater. This film is not only excellent in the formability during formation into cans or the like, but has excellent properties in taste property, particularly, the taste property after the retorting, and may be suitably used for containers produced by forming process and, particularly, for metallic cans.

Biaxially stretched polyester film for forming container and method of producing the film

A biaxially oriented polyester film capable of lining the interior and/or exterior of a container, including a polyester containing about 93 mol % or more of ethylene terephthalate. The film has a breaking elongation in the machine direction. (S MD) and the breaking elongation in the transverse direction (S TD), satisfying the relationships 140%&lE;(S MD&plus;S TD)/2&lE;300% and &verbar;S MD&minus;S TD&verbar;&lE;60%. The film is capable of lining the interior and/or exterior of food containers, especially on the inner and outer faces of metallic cans, since the film exhibits excellent formability, impact resistance and taste properties.

A gas barrier film comprises a thermoplastic resin substrate and on the substrate a gas barrier coating, which coating comprises a water soluble or water dispersible high polymer and inorganic stratified particles. In one film, the surface of the gas barrier coating remote from the substrate has a roughness parameter Rt/Ra of 25 or less. In an alternative film, the gas barrier coating contains an amine compound represented by the following general formula: ##STR1## where R1 stands for a hydrogen atom, or a C.sub.1-6 alkyl or allyl or phenyl group; R2 stands for a hydrogen atom, or an optionally substrated alkyl or allyl group; and R3 stands for an optionally substituted alkyl or allyl group.

Disclosed is a biaxially oriented, laminated polyester film having a lamination structure with at least two layers. At least one of the outermost layers of the film is a thin laminated layer A having a thickness of not more than 3 .mu.m. In the layer A, internally formed particles and specified agglomerated particles or mono-dispersed particles are present, or the mono-dispersed particles are present at a very small content. When the polyester film is used as a base film for magnetic recording media, the abrasion resistance of the film surface at a high speed can be greatly increased.

Biaxially oriented, laminated polyester film

Disclosed is a polyester film having a surface layer whose major component is polyester A. Protrusions are formed on the film surface originating from the crystallization of polyester A. The number of protrusions formed on the surface of the film is not less than 5.times.10.sup.3 /mm.sup.2, and the ratio N.sub.R of the number of protrusions to the number of particles contained in a surface layer forming the surface of the film is not less than 5. Since most of or the whole of the protrusions are formed by utilizing the crystallization of polyester A without relying particles, generation of voids can be prevented and fine and uniform protrusions having excellent chipping resistance and scratch resistance can be formed.

Process for producing film

A polyester film has a surface layer whose major component is polyester A wherein protrusions formed on the film surface originating from the crystallization of polyester A. The number of protrusions formed on the surface of the film is not less than 5.times.10.sup.3 /mm.sup.2, and the ratio N.sub.R of the number of protrusions to the number of particles contained in a surface layer forming the surface of the film is not less than 5. Since most of or the whole of the protrusions are formed by the crystallization of polyester A as opposed to particles, generation of voids can be prevented fine and uniform protrusions having excellent chipping resistance and scratch resistance can be formed.

Disclosed is a biaxially oriented film and a laminated film containing specified organic particles at a content of 0.001 to 20% by weight. The strength when deformed by 10% (S.sub.10) of the organic particles is in the range of 3 to 30 kgf/mm.sup.2, the thermal decomposition temperature for causing 10% loss in weight thereof is not lower than 350.degree. C. The weight average diameter thereof is in the range of 0.005 to 5 .mu.m. Since the organic particles have a good affinity with the matrix resin of the film and a good thermal resistance and the hardness of the particles is appropriate, desired protrusions hardly chipped and having an appropriate hardness for hardly scratching a magnetic surface can be formed on a film surface easily and uniformly. Therefore, a film excellent in abrasion resistance and scratch resistance at a high running speed and excellent in running durability can be obtained, which is useful particularly as a base film of a magnetic tape.

Disclosed is a biaxially oriented thermoplastic resin film formed by laminating a layer A composed of a thermoplastic resin A containing particles on at least one surface of a layer B composed of a thermoplastic resin B. The film has a specified ratio t/d of the thickness of the layer A 't' to the mean diameter of the particles contained in the thermoplastic resin A 'd', a specified number of protrusions having a diameter of not less than 0.7 .mu.m and not more than 2.6 .mu.m among protrusions existing on the surface of the layer A and a specified ratio L/S of a number S of protrusions having a smaller diameter to the number L of protrusions having a diameter in the above range. An excellent winding property when the film is wound and an excellent dubbing resistance when the film is used for a video tape can be obtained.
