Naphthalene derivative of the formula: ##STR1## wherein Ring A is a substituted or unsubstituted benzene ring; each of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 is a group of the formula: --OR.sup.5, --NHR.sup.5 or ##STR2## or either one of R.sup.1 and R.sup.2 is a lower alkoxy group and the other one is a group of the formula: --OR.sup.5, --NHR.sup.5 or ##STR3## each of R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 is a lower alkoxy group, or one of R.sup.3 and R.sup.4 is a lower alkoxy group and the other is a hydrogen atom; R.sup.5 is a substituted alkyl group, a heterocyclic group, a cycloalkyl group, an alkyl group of at least 5 carbon atoms or alkenyl group; and each of R.sup.6 and R.sup.7 is hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group and salts thereof are disclosed. Said naphthalene derivative (I) and its salts have excellent hypolipidemic activity and are useful for treatment or prophylaxis of hyperlipidemia and/or arteriosclerosis.

Disclosed are a pharmaceutical composition for improving the constitution of lipids in blood, which comprises as an active ingredient 2-(4-methoxyphenyl)-3-acetoxy-5-[2-(dimethylamino)ethyl]-8-chloro-2,3-dihy dro-1,5-benzothiazepin-4(5H)-one or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salt thereof, use of the compound for preparing the pharmaceutical composition and a method of improving the constitution of lipids in blood.

A furyloxazolylacetic acid derivative of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R.sup.1 is alkyl of one to 6 carbon atoms, cycloalkyl of 5 to 6 carbon atoms, phenyl or a substituted phenyl (said substituted phenyl being phenyl group substituted with one or two radicals selected from alkyl of one to 2 carbon atoms, alkoxy of one to 2 carbon atoms and halogen), and R.sup.2 is hydrogen or alkyl of one to 12 carbon atoms. The compound (I) is useful as a hypolipidemic agent.

A nicotinoyl carnitine compound of the formula: ##STR1## wherein R is lower alkoxy, benzyloxy or amino and X is an anionic residue of a pharmaceutically acceptable acid, is prepared by reacting a carnitine derivative of the formula: ##STR2## wherein R is the same as defined above, with nicotinic acid or a functional derivative thereof. The derivative [I] and the pharmaceutically acceptable acid addition salts of said compound are useful as hypolipidemic agents.
