The present invention provides a light source device for emitting concentrated light, which is prepared by concentrating light emitted from a light source, including: the light source; a reflective box in which the light source is provided; a plurality of light guides having a circular column shape or a polygonal column shape and having two end surfaces being different in area; and light separating means, the reflective box having a plurality of openings, each opening being provided with one of the light guides in such a way that the end surface smaller in area faces the light source, and each light separating means being provided at a position between the adjacent ones of the openings. Xenon light emitted from a xenon light source heads for a wavelength-selecting mirror through a taper coupler and an air mass filter. The wavelength-selecting mirror reflects a short wavelength component of the xenon light and emits the short wavelength component to a taper member. Halogen light emitted from a halogen light source heads for a wavelength-selecting mirror through a taper coupler and a reflecting mirror. The wavelength-selecting mirror transmits a long wavelength component of the halogen light and emits the long wavelength component to the taper member. The taper member has width gradually decreasing from an entrance plane for light to an exit plane for the light. The light emitted from the taper member is changed so that a radiation directivity of a component originating from the xenon light becomes similar to a radiation directivity of a component originating from the halogen light. This makes it possible to provide a solar simulator performing irradiation of artificial sunlight having uniform illumination distribution onto an irradiation-target surface.

A lens tube has two, first and second lenses (), a tubular lens frame () for holding the two lenses (), and three spacers () in contact with the opposite lens surfaces of the first and second lenses (). The spacers () are arranged so as to be in contact with curved surfaces of the first and second lenses () and determine the distance between the first and second lenses (). The lens frame () has the same inner diameter between the first and second lenses (), and the spacers () are in contact with the inner wall of the lens frame (). Since the lens frame () has the same inner diameter between the first and second lenses (), the first and second lenses () are held with their centers perfectly aligned with each other.

A combination lens according to an embodiment of the present invention includes at least two lenses housed in a lens barrel, three or more spherical bodies disposed between the lenses, and support members that respectively support these spherical bodies by tack force or adhesive force. A return light beam of light reflected by a magneto-optical recording medium is polarized and separated into &#xb1; first-order diffracted lights through a light-branching diffraction element provided between a light source and an objective lens. The &#xb1; first-order diffracted lights are compensated for their phases through first and second phase compensation elements so that there is no phase difference between the polarizations, and are, further, polarized and separated through the first and second polarization/separation elements, and are received by first and second light detectors. Use of the first and second phase compensation elements having different phase compensation amounts makes it possible to cope with the magneto-optical recording media of different recording/reproducing systems.

The optical miniaturized module includes a semiconductor laser for irradiating an optical disk with laser light, a diffraction grating for forming a main beam and two sub beams from the laser light, a polarization hologram for dividing reflected light from the optical disk, and a photodetector for detecting the reflected light. The polarization hologram includes a first parting line defined in a direction optically corresponding to a radial direction as the optical disk rotates. A main beam M incident area is divided with a boundary defined by the first parting line. A sub beam A incident area and a sub beam B incident area are each arranged avoiding the first parting line.

An optical path switching device comprises a light transmitting portion, a first electrode layer, a second electrode layer, a first adhesive layer, a second adhesive layer, a first supporting portion and a second supporting portion. The light transmitting portion has a plurality of refracting regions wherein the refractive indexes of a light can be uniformly controlled by the electro-optic effect in the direction perpendicular to the traveling direction of the light, and the thickness of the light transmitting portion changes along the traveling direction of the light. The first electrode layer and the second electrode layer are so formed as to sandwich the light transmitting portion and as to cover at least a part of the refracting regions. The first supporting portion is tightly arranged on a side of the first electrode layer, which side is out of contact with the light transmitting layer, via the first adhesive layer. The second supporting portion is tightly arranged on a side of the second electrode layer, which side is out of contact with the light transmitting layer, via the second adhesive layer.

Beam shaping means may have a shaping ratio set to allow a light beam emitted from a semiconductor laser and having an elliptic intensity distribution to have an ellipticity of no more than two to obtain a spot achieving high light availability and reduced in size. The optical pickup device according to the present invention, includes: a light emitting diode for emitting a light beam; a collimating lens for collimating the light beam; an objective lens for focusing the collimated light beam from the collimating lens onto a recording medium; a beam splitter for splitting the light beam returned from the recording medium into two light beams; a servo error signal detector for receiving one of the two light beams and detecting a servo error signal; a diffracting element for diffracting the one of the two light beams from the beam splitter to direct the one of the two light beams toward the servo error signal detector; and an optical waveguide element for receiving the other one of the two light beams and detecting a magneto-optical signal, the other one of the two light beams from the beam splitter being incident upon the optical waveguide element without passing through the diffracting element, wherein the beam splitter is disposed between the collimating lens and the diffracting element.

A mode splitter and the magneto-optical pick-up device including the mode splitter. The mode splitter includes a tapered waveguide portion whose thickness gradually becomes thin so that a light of at least one mode can be cut off. An emission position of a light wave can be varied depending on its mode. In this mode splitter, the emission position of the light wave of each mode can be adjusted by changing a thickness of the tapered waveguide, thereby improving the degree of freedom in designing the device.
