A direct injection type engine comprising a variable speed transmission. Engine control lines indicating the relationship between the engine rotational speed and required torque necessary for obtaining a required output are comprised of a first control line and a second control line at the high torque side and low speed side of the first control line. When the degree of activation of the exhaust gas purification device is low, the required torque and the engine rotational speed are made ones on the first control line in accordance with the required output, while when the degree of activation is high, the required torque and the engine rotational speed are made ones on the second control line in accordance with the required output.

Direct injection type engine

An exhaust gas purification device of an engine comprising a particulate filter arranged in an exhaust passage. An electric motor able to impart a vehicle drive power separate from the engine and able to generate electric power from the engine is provided. After the particulate filter finishes being warmed up, when the temperature of the particulate filter is low, the output torque of the engine is increased and the amount of increase of the output torque is consumed by the power generating action of the electric motor.

Exhaust gas purification device of an engine

A compression ignition type engine selectively switching between a first combustion where an amount of recirculated exhaust gas supplied in a combustion chamber ( ) is greater than an amount of recirculated exhaust gas where the amount of production of soot peaks and a second combustion where the amount of recirculated exhaust gas supplied in the combustion chamber ( ) is smaller than the amount of recirculated exhaust gas where the amount of production of soot peaks. A particulate filter ( ) carrying a NO absorbent ( ) is arranged in the engine exhaust passage. When SOx should be released from the NOx absorbent ( ) and there is leeway in the electrical energy stored in the battery ( ), the first combustion is performed even when the second combustion should be performed and the drop in output power of the energy is made up by the output torque of an electric motor ( ).

Compression ignition type engine

There is provided a compression ignition type engine comprising an exhaust gas purification catalyst, and an electric motor for generating an output separated from the engine output. The engine may selectively perform a first control to make the engine output an output larger than that determined on the basis of the engine operation state, and a second control to operate the engine under the first combustion mode in which the inert gas amount in the chamber is larger than that in which the soot generation amount is peak.

A method and apparatus is provided that can detect even small amounts of gas leakage and can perform a proper fail-safe operation when gas leakage is detected. When an engine is stopped and a gas shut-off valve is closed, the amount of decrease of gas pressure is calculated by comparing initial gas pressure with the gas pressure detected after the elapse of a prescribed time, to detect gas leakage. In one embodiment, gas leakage is detected by calculating the accumulated value of the amount of decrease of gas pressure each time the engine is stopped. In another embodiment, gas leakage is detected by calculating the rate of decrease of gas pressure from the initial gas pressure to the gas pressure detected after the elapse of a prescribed time. In a further embodiment, gas leakage is detected by calculating the accumulated value of the rate of decrease of gas pressure each time the engine is stopped. Further, when gas leakage is detected, the gas shut-off valve is closed and a warning is issued.

Gas leakage detection and fail-safe control method for gas-fueled internal combustion engine and apparatus for implementing the same

A three-way catalyst device having an oxygen absorbing/releasing capability is provided in an exhaust passage of an internal combustion engine. An upstream-side air-fuel ratio sensor that outputs an output value in accordance with the air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas is provided in the exhaust passage upstream of the three-way catalyst device. A downstream-side air-fuel ratio sensor that outputs an output value in accordance with the air-fuel ratio of exhaust gas is provided in the exhaust passage downstream of the three-way catalyst device. A comparison value is calculated by comparing the length of an output locus formed by output values of the upstream-side air-fuel ratio sensor and the length of an output locus formed by output values of the downstream-side air-fuel ratio sensor. By comparing the comparison value with a predetermined criterion, it is determined whether the three-way catalyst device has deteriorated. At least one of the downstream-side air-fuel ratio sensor output value and the predetermined criterion is corrected in accordance with the downstream-side air-fuel ratio sensor output value. Therefore, deterioration of the three-way catalyst device can be determined with high precision.

Catalyst deterioration determining apparatus for internal combustion engine, and control method for the apparatus

A compressed natural gas-fueled automotive vehicle is disclosed in which the fail-safe control operation is performed thereby to secure the safety of the vehicle when the gas pressure drops. If the remaining amount of the gas is very small, an engine misfire occurs. If the catalyst temperature is high, the uncombusted gas begins to burn on contact with the high-temperature catalyst in the catalyst unit. In view of this, upon detection of both a gas pressure drop and the vehicle moving condition or upon detection of both a gas pressure drop and an increased catalyst temperature, the fuel supply is stopped or the vehicle speed is reduced to thereby reduce the catalyst temperature. As a result, uncombusted gas is not burnt in the catalyst unit and the catalyst unit is prevented from being destroyed.

Fuel injection control system for compressed natural gas-fueled automotive vehicle

In a double air-fuel sensor system including two air-fuel ratio sensors upstream and downstream of a catalyst converter provided in an exhaust gas passage, an air-fuel ratio correction amount is calculated in accordance with the outputs of the upstream-side and downstream-side air-fuel ratio sensors, thereby obtaining an actual air-fuel ratio. When all of the feedback control conditions for the downstream-side air-fuel ratio sensor are satisfied, a speed of renewal of the air-fuel ratio correction amount in accordance with the output of the downstream-side air-fuel ratio sensor is lowered before the output of the downstream-side air-fuel ratio sensor is reversed or for a predetermined time period.

Double air-fuel ratio sensor system having improved exhaust emission

An apparatus for indicating an optimum time to shift a manual transmission in a vehicle. An electronic control unit is provided to compare the actual gear shift position with the electronically memorized optimum gear shift position. The optimum gear shift position is predetermined by examining the parameters of engine speed, vehicle speed, engine load and engine temperature. If the actual gear shift position differs from the memorized and stored optimum gear shift position, the operator is notified by a shift indicator lamp or loudspeaker.

Apparatus for indicating an optimum time to shift a manual transmission

Disclosed is a secondary air supplying device of an internal combustion engine having an exhaust passage provided with a catalyzer for purifying exhaust gas. The device includes a first air injection port provided in the exhaust passage at the upstream side of an exhaust manifold and a second air injection port provided in the exhaust passage at the upstream side of the catalyzer. Under the engine warming operating condition only when the engine speed is abruptly accelerated, or during a predetermined time interval after the engine is warmed, is secondary air injected into the exhaust passage from the second air injection port. When the engine is in the other operating conditions, secondary air is injected into the exhaust passage from the first air injection port.
