A method of assessing odors, comprises providing an electronic nose that extracts measurements from odors, from which measurements at least n chemical descriptors are extracted where n is greater than unity, and typically around 18. The electronic nose is applied to an odor, and odor information is extracted. The information is plotted to a first location on an n-dimensional sample space, each dimension being related to a respective one of the n chemical descriptors or otherwise optimized for the particular enose and the measurements it makes; and an assessment of the odor is provided based on the plotted location. The assessment may be a description based on odor describing terms, or may be a chemical description in terms of chemicals that can synthesize the odor, and the odor may then be synthesized based on the chemical description.

Utilization of electronic nose-based analysis of odorants

An odorant mixture is disclosed. The odorant mixture comprises N odorant components wherein N equals at least 20. Each odorant component is characterized by a multidimensional vector of attributes. A z score of an average of characteristic distances between vectors corresponding to odorant components in the mixture and vectors corresponding to odorant components in a group of M odorant components but not in the mixture is less than 2.

Olfactory signature and odorant mixture having the same

A method of determining olfactory perception signature of a subject is disclosed. The method comprises: providing the subject with a plurality of physical odorant samples for sniffing; for each sniffed odorant sample, presenting to the subject, by a user interface, a set of odorant descriptors and a respective set of rating controls, and receiving ratings entered by the subject using the rating controls. Each rating is indicative of a descriptiveness of a respective odorant descriptor for the odorant sample, thereby obtaining a set of descriptiveness levels for the odorant sample. The method also comprises calculating, by a computer, relations between pairs of sets of descriptiveness levels corresponding to pairs of odorant samples, to provide a vector of relations, wherein the vector represents the olfactory perception signature of the subject.
