A table () is located in a first position and a second position which is rotated at 90 degrees from the first position. A cover () is arranged on a top face of the table () and fixed to the table () by fixing means (). Cardboards are preliminarily attached to predetermined positions on a rear face of the cover (), and an outer margin of a predetermined width is formed outside the cardboard. Folding units () are arranged on either side of the table (), and guided by guide rails () for reciprocal linear movement in directions toward and away from the table (). The folding units () are located in an outer margin folding position at which said folding units () engage with the cover () on the table () and fold the outer margin of the cover () so as to attach the outer margin to the cardboards, and a standby position at which the folding units () separate from the cover (). A control unit controls the table () and the folding units (). The folding units () are synchronized with each other in such a manner that the folding units () simultaneously fold the outer margin of the cover () each time the table () is located in the first and second positions.

Apparatus for forming hardback book cover

A three-side trimmer according to the present invention comprises a bound material feed unit () for feeding the bound material () one by one; a rotating table unit () for receiving the bound material () from the bound material feed unit () at a predetermined position and rotating the bound material at every predetermined angle in such a manner that the bound material is arranged at three positions of a top edge cutting position, a front edge cutting position and a bottom edge cutting position; a trimming unit () arranged for movement in a direction close to or away from the rotating table unit () between two positions of a cutting position at which the trimming unit () becomes close to the rotating table unit () so as to cut a top edge section (), a bottom edge section () and a front edge section () of the bound material (), respectively, and a standby position at which the trimming unit () is away from the rotating table unit (); trimming unit guide means () arranged between the rotating table unit () and the trimming unit (); drive means () for moving the trimming unit () along the trimming unit guide means () between the cutting position and the stand-by position; a control unit () for controlling the operation of each of the rotating table unit (), the trimming unit () and the drive means (), whereby the trimming unit () moves from the standby position to the cutting position for cutting the top edge section (), the front edge section () and the bottom edge section () of the bound material (), respectively every time the bound material () is arranged at the top edge cutting position, front edge cutting position and the bottom edge cutting position; and receiving position changing means for shifting the position at which the rotating table unit () receives die bound material () from the bound material feed unit ().

Three-side trimmer

A lower guillotine cutter blade () is mounted to a frame (). A guillotine cutter-blade holder () holds an upper guillotine cutter blade () and vertically reciprocates with respect to the lower guillotine cutter blade (). Rods () are vertically slidably mounted to the guillotine cutter-blade holder (). A pressing plate () is secured to the lower ends of the rods (). Springs () are fitted around the rods () between the guillotine cutter-blade holder () and the pressing plate () for downwardly elastically biasing the rods () so that the heads () of the rods are kept abutted against the guillotine cutter-blade holder (). In a cutting operation, after the pressing plate () is brought into abutment with a batch of paper (), the guillotine cutter-blade holder () is further downwardly moved, thereby causing the lower and upper guillotine cutter blades (and) to cut the batch of paper () and also causing the heads () to upwardly protrude from the guillotine cutter-blade holder (). At this time, a sensor () mounted to the guillotine cutter-blade holder () detects the distance to the heads (). A thickness measuring element () determines the thickness of the batch of paper () on the basis of the detection signal.

Guillotine cutter

The milling apparatus () is arranged in such a manner that the deep groove cutter () is attached to the milling cutter () and the rotational drive shaft () is approximately orthogonal to a spine () of a sheet bundle () by the mechanism for tilting the drive apparatus () when an EVA-based hot melt adhesive is used. The milling apparatus () is arranged in such a manner that the shallow cutter () is attached to the milling cutter () and the rotational drive shaft () is tilted with respect to a conveying direction of the sheet bundle () by the mechanism for tilting the drive apparatus () when a PUR-based holt melt adhesive is used.

A book binding system for a saddle-stitched bound booklet comprises a sheet feeding section () feeding sheets or sets of sheets (P) one by one, a sheet folding section () sequentially receiving a sheet or a set of sheets (P) from the sheet feeding section () and folding the sheet or the set of sheets (P) along the center line thereof, a sheet stacking section () stacking the sheet or the set of sheets (P) folded by the sheet folding section () in such a manner that the folded sheets or the folded sets of sheets are aligned with each other with respect to the fold lines thereof, a sheet stitching section () receiving a stack of the sheets or the sets of sheets (P') from the sheet stacking section () each time the predetermined number of the sheets or the sets of sheets (P) are stacked in the sheet stacking section, and stitching the stack of the sheets or the sets of sheets (P&#x2032;) at the fold line thereof, and a control section () controlling operation of the sheet feeding section (), the sheet folding section () and the sheet stitching section ().

Book binding method and system for saddle stitched bound booklet

The three-side trimmer comprises an alignment station (F) for receiving booklet bundle () and aligning the booklets, and a cutting station (D) for cutting the top, bottom and fore edges of the bundle, and a chuck mechanism () which holds the bundle and conveys it to the cutting station. The cutting station has a cutting table (), a top edge cutting knife (), a bottom edge cutting knife (), a fore edge cutting knife, and a pressing platemovable between a waiting position and a working position. An encoder reads the data about the rotational position of the servomotor () in the chuck mechanism while it holds the booklet bundle. The control portion () measures the height of the bundle and controls a driving mechanism of the pressing plate such that the pressing plate moves up and down between waiting and working positions.
