In a printed matter identifying apparatus of the present invention, the light source illuminates the detecting fields of the note. The reflected light-waves from the detecting fields are lead to the light receivers through the focusing lenses, the diffusion plates, the optical slits, the light conducting paths and red color transmitting and blue color transmitting filters. The output signals from the light receivers are amplified by the amplifiers and sampled by the sampling circuits. Among the sampled color component signals, the red component signals are applied to the subtracter to produce the red component difference signal and the blue component signals are applied to the adder to produce the blue component sum signal. These different signal and sum signal are applied to the comparators respectively and compared with the reference signals read out from the memory. The output signals from the comparators are supplied to the judgment circuit where the judgment of the printed matter is performed.

Printed matter identifying apparatus

An apparatus for optically detecting a security thread embedded in a paper-like material, e.g., a paper currency. The paper-like material is carried through a detection region defined by an infrared radiation source and two infrared radiation detectors. Two optical filters are mounted on the detectors, respectively. Those filters have different infrared transmission characteristics. Therefore, one detector can detect infrared rays having wavelengths only within a specific range determined by that one filter, and the other detector can detect infrared rays having wavelengths only within another specific range determined by the other filter. When the infrared radiation source projects infrared rays to the paper-like material, the detectors deliver the respective detection signals. A processor processes these detection signals to determine whether or not a security thread is embedded in the paper-like material and also what a detected security material is made of.

A currency note identification system comprises a line sensor generating a scanning signal corresponding to the printed pattern on a currency note, an adder for summing picture element signals in the scanning signal from the line sensor for each scanning line, and a detecting circuit for detecting the leading and trailing edges of a printed section of the currency note from the sum signal output of the adder. Printed pattern data for printed patterns at predetermined positions with respect to the leading and trailing edges detected by the detecting circuit are detected, and the similarity of the detected pattern data to standard pattern data is calculated by a calculator. The kind and/or genuineness of the currency note is determined from the similarity obtained from the calculator.

System for identifying currency note

This disclosure concerns currency identification systems for examining an authenticity characteristic of a detected currency and comparing it to an authenticity characteristic of a genuine currency to determine if the detected currency is genuine. The systems comprises memory means for storing a series of first electrical signals representing the authenticity characteristic of the genuine currency, each of the first signals corresponding to a discrete successive area of the genuine currency and representing a component of a first authenticity vector, detecting means for scanning the detected currency and generating a series of second electrical signals representing the authenticity characteristic of the detected currency, each of the second signals corresponding to a discrete successive area of the detected currency and representing a component of a second authenticity vector, calculating means coupled to the detecting means and the memory means to calculate a value of similarity corresponding to an angle between the first authenticity vector and the second authenticity vector, and comparing means for comparing the value of similarity with a predetermined value which represents a permissable authenticity value for the detected currency corresponding to a genuine currency.

An apparatus for identifying whether a sheet-like printed matter is true or false comprises means for detecting a plurality of positions of a moving sheet-like printed matter to produce a plurality of position signals, timing signal generating means for producing timing signals on the basis of the position signals, a reference light source for irradiating an information detecting area lying on the object moving path to detect the information of the sheet-like object, opto-electric converting means which produces an electric signal with an amplitude corresponding to an intensity of a reference light transmitted through or reflected from the printed matter when the object exists in the information detecting area and an electric signal with an amplitude corresponding to an intensity of reference light when the object does not exist in the information detecting area; integration means for integrating the electrical signal from the opto-electric converting means which integrates an electric signal from the opto-electric converting means during a first period defined by a timing signal from the timing signal generating means and integrates an electric output signal of the printed matter during the second period defined by the timing signal from the timing signal generating means, an operation means for operating a ratio of the integrated data of the reference light with integrated data of the printed data of the printed matter, and judging means which compares the operated data derived from the operation means with the data representing a true printed matter previously stored to judge whether the printed matter is true or not.
