An internal combustion engine includes an engine block defining a plurality of cylinders each receiving a piston. A crankcase extends from the engine block and supports a crankshaft drivingly connected to the pistons and including a chamber enclosed by a wall portion that defines a first blow-by flow passage and first and second drain passages therethrough. An oil sump mounted to the crankcase. A first oil separator is mounted to the wall of the crankcase in communication with the first blow-by flow passage and the first drain passage and defining a second blow-by flow passage therethrough and a third drain passage extending therethrough in communication with the second drain passage. A second oil separator mounted to the first oil separator in communication with the third drain passage and defining a third blow-by flow passage in communication with the second blow-by flow passage.

Integrated oil separator assembly for crankcase ventilation

An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block defining a cylinder and a cylinder head mounted to the block. The cylinder head supplies air and fuel to the cylinder for combustion therein. The engine also includes an exhaust manifold operatively connected to the cylinder head and having first and second outlets configured to exhaust post-combustion gasses from the cylinder. The engine also includes a turbocharging system including a low-flow turbocharger driven by the post-combustion gasses from the first outlet to pressurize the airflow and a high-flow turbocharger driven by the post-combustion gasses from the second outlet. The turbocharging system also includes a flow control device for selectively directing the post-combustion gasses to the low-flow and high-flow turbochargers. The turbocharging system additionally includes a motor-generator to selectively assist the post-combustion gasses in driving either the low-flow or the high-flow turbocharger and generate electric current when driven via the subject turbocharger.

Turbocharging system with electric motor(s)

An engine control system includes an internal combustion engine including a plurality of cylinders. An intake manifold is connected to the internal combustion engine. An exhaust manifold is connected to the internal combustion engine. A supercharger is connected to an air intake passage and the intake manifold and includes a variable speed drive. A throttle valve is disposed in the air intake passage. An exhaust passage is in connection with the exhaust manifold. A passive selective catalytic reduction catalyst system is in communication with the exhaust passage. An exhaust gas recirculation passage is in communication with the exhaust passage and the air intake passage and includes an exhaust gas recirculation valve. A controller controls the variable speed drive of the supercharger and the throttle valve and the exhaust gas recirculation valve based upon engine conditions.

Variable-speed supercharger for highly diluted internal combustion engines

An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block defining first and second cylinders, and a cylinder head coupled to the block. The engine also includes a passage having a first outlet and a second outlet for exhausting post-combustion gasses from the cylinder head. The engine additionally includes a mechanism for selectively activating and deactivating the first cylinder and a turbocharging system having a low-flow turbocharger and a high-flow turbocharger. The low-flow turbocharger is driven by gasses from the first outlet and the high-flow turbocharger is driven by gasses from the second outlet. The turbocharging system also includes a first flow-control device that directs the gasses via the first and second outlets to the turbochargers when the first and second cylinders are activated. The first flow-control device also directs the gasses via the first outlet only to the low-flow turbocharger and blocks the second outlet when the first cylinder is deactivated.

Engine with cylinder deactivation and multi-stage turbocharging system

An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block defining a cylinder, a cylinder head, an intake valve, an exhaust valve, and a variable exhaust valve timing mechanism. The engine also includes a turbocharging system configured to pressurize ambient airflow for delivery to the cylinder. The turbocharging system includes a low-flow turbocharger, a high-flow turbocharger, and a flow control device for selectively directing post-combustion gas to the low-flow and high-flow turbochargers. A controller directs the post-combustion gas to the low-flow turbocharger and selects a first predetermined exhaust valve timing when the engine operates below a predetermined speed and above a predetermined load. Alternatively, the controller directs the post-combustion gas to the high-flow turbocharger and selects a second predetermined exhaust valve timing at or above the predetermined engine speed. The first predetermined exhaust valve timing traps less post-combustion gas in the cylinder as compared to the second predetermined exhaust valve timing.

Control of internal combustion engine with two-stage turbocharging

An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block defining a cylinder, a cylinder head, and an exhaust manifold operatively connected to the cylinder head and configured to exhaust post-combustion gasses from the cylinder. The engine also includes a turbocharging system configured to pressurize an airflow for delivery thereof to the cylinder. The turbocharging system includes a low-flow turbocharger having a first turbine housing and a high-flow turbocharger having a second turbine housing. Each turbocharger is configured to be driven by the post-combustion gasses from the exhaust manifold in order to pressurize the airflow and discharge the pressurized airflow to the cylinder. The turbocharging system also includes a flow control device for selectively directing the post-combustion gasses to the low-flow and high-flow turbochargers. The turbocharging system additionally includes a cooling module configured to cool the second turbine housing. A vehicle employing such an engine is also disclosed.

Cooled two-stage turbocharging system

An exhaust manifold for at least a portion of an internal combustion engine having a defined number of combustion chambers includes a plurality of inlet ports and four outlet ports. A first pair of the four outlet ports are disposed in gas flow communication with a first subset of the plurality of inlet ports, and a second pair of the four outlet ports different from the first pair are disposed in gas flow communication with a second subset of the plurality of inlet ports different from the first subset.

Exhaust manifold

According to one embodiment of the invention, a turbine housing includes a turbine inlet in fluid communication with a turbine volute configured to house a turbine wheel, the turbine inlet configured to direct an exhaust gas flow from an engine to the turbine wheel. The turbine housing also includes a turbine outlet in fluid communication with the turbine volute, the turbine outlet configured to direct the exhaust gas flow to an exhaust gas conduit and a first exhaust gas recirculation supply port located on and in fluid communication with the turbine outlet, the first exhaust gas recirculation supply port being configured to direct a portion of the exhaust gas flow to an exhaust gas recirculation supply conduit.

Boosting devices with integral features for recirculating exhaust gas

An internal combustion engine includes a cylinder block defining a cylinder and a cylinder head mounted to the block. The cylinder head supplies air and fuel to the cylinder for combustion therein. The engine also includes an exhaust manifold operatively connected to the cylinder head and having a first outlet and a second outlet configured to exhaust post-combustion gasses from the cylinder. The engine also includes a turbocharging system configured to pressurize an airflow for delivery thereof to the cylinder. The turbocharging system includes a low-flow turbocharger driven by the post-combustion gasses from the first outlet to pressurize the airflow and a high-flow turbocharger driven by the post-combustion gasses from the second outlet to pressurize the airflow. The turbocharging system additionally includes a flow control device for selectively directing the post-combustion gasses to the low-flow and high-flow turbochargers. A vehicle employing such an engine is also disclosed.

Turbocharging system

According to one embodiment of the invention, a compressor housing includes a compressor inlet in fluid communication with a compressor volute configured to house a compressor wheel, the compressor inlet configured to provide a first air flow to the compressor wheel and a compressor outlet in fluid communication with the compressor volute, the compressor outlet configured to direct a compressed gas to an intake manifold. The compressor housing further includes an exhaust gas recirculation inlet port in fluid communication with the compressor volute, the exhaust gas recirculation inlet port being configured to combine an exhaust gas flow with the air flow to the compressor wheel.

An internal combustion engine includes an engine defining a plurality of cylinders including full-time active cylinders and cylinders capable of being deactivated. A turbocharger system having a high pressure turbocharger in communication with the exhaust passages from the full-time active cylinders and a low pressure turbocharger in communication with the exhaust passages from the cylinders capable of being deactivated. A control valve is provided in communication with the exhaust passages from the full-time active cylinders and being operable in an open position to allow exhaust gases from the full-time active cylinders to pass through the second turbocharger along with the exhaust gasses from the cylinders capable of being deactivated, and being operable in a closed position to direct exhaust gases from the full-time active cylinders to pass through the first turbocharger.

Two-stage turbocharger system for internal combustion engines featuring cylinder deactivation

An internal combustion engine defines a plurality of cylinders including full-time active cylinders and cylinders capable of being deactivated. A turbocharger having a twin scroll turbine includes a first turbine scroll in communication with the exhaust passages from the full-time active cylinders and a second turbine scroll in communication with the exhaust passages from the cylinders capable of being deactivated. A scroll control valve is provided in communication with the exhaust passages from the cylinders capable of being deactivated and being operable in an open position to allow exhaust gases from the cylinders capable of being deactivated to pass through the second turbine scroll, and being operable in a closed position to direct exhaust gases from the plurality of second cylinders capable of being deactivated to pass through the first turbine scroll.

Variable twin-scroll turbine for turbocharged internal combustion engine featuring cylinder deactivation

In an embodiment, a method for turbocharging a stratified charge engine includes flowing, in a turbocharged mode, exhaust gas from the engine into a turbocharger based on the engine having a load greater than a threshold load and the engine operating in a first range of engine speeds, the threshold load comprising a peak load for engine operation in a naturally-aspirated mode using a lean air-fuel mixture and providing, by the turbocharger while in the turbocharged mode, an increased amount of air to a combustion chamber in the engine based on the turbocharger receiving the exhaust gas. The method also includes restricting flow, in the naturally-aspirated mode, of the exhaust gas into the turbocharger based on at least one of: the engine having a load less than the threshold load or the engine operating in a second range of engine speeds, the second range being greater than the first range.

Stratified charge engine with turbocharger

According to one embodiment of the invention, a secondary air injection system includes a first conduit in fluid communication with at least one first exhaust passage of the internal combustion engine and a second conduit in fluid communication with at least one second exhaust passage of the internal combustion engine, wherein the at least one first and second exhaust passages are in fluid communication with a turbocharger. The system also includes an air supply in fluid communication with the first and second conduits and a flow control device that controls fluid communication between the air supply and the first conduit and the second conduit and thereby controls fluid communication to the first and second exhaust passages of the internal combustion engine.

Secondary air injection system and method

An intake system for an internal combustion engine comprises an exhaust driven turbocharger configured to deliver compressed intake charge, comprising exhaust gas from the exhaust system and ambient air, through an intake charge conduit and to cylinders of the internal combustion engine. An intake charge cooler is in fluid communication with the intake charge conduit. A cooling system, independent of the cooling system for the internal combustion engine, is in fluid communication with the intake charge cooler through a cooling system conduit. A coolant pump delivers a low temperature cooling medium from the cooling system to and through the intake charge cooler for the transfer of heat from the compressed intake charge thereto. A low temperature cooler receives the heated cooling medium through the cooling system conduit for the transfer of heat therefrom.
