An adjustable lumbar support assembly for a seat has a curved lumbar support member that is made from a plastic material and an adjustment mechanism operatively connected to the curved lumbar support member for adjusting between various degrees of curvature. The curved lumbar support member may include a plurality of reinforcing ribs that allow a greater degree of curvature adjacent one end of the element than the degree of curvature adjacent the other end of the element. The reinforcing ribs allow for varying degrees of curvature because the cross section of the ribs varies. Further, the reinforcing ribs are integral with the curved lumbar support member. The adjustable lumbar assembly could also include at least one resilient metal strap connected to the curved lumbar support member that allows a greater degree of curvature adjacent one end of the curved lumbar support member than the degree of curvature adjacent the other end of the element.

The invention relates to an apparatus for adjusting the arching of a resiliently flexible support element for supporting the pelvic and/or lumbar vertebrae in a back rest of a seat including an arching means. According to the invention, a flexible support element is suspended in a seat by multiple guide rods, and a Bowden cable is connected to the support element in such a manner as to arch the support element when traction is applied thereto. A restoring spring draws the support element from its arched position. An intermediate spring is used in combination with the Bowden cable such that the support element resiliently yields to major pressure. Another spring provides compensating forces to counteract the arching adjustment, thereby substantially reducing the force to be exerted in order to adjust the degree of arching.

Device for adjusting a flexible support element of a backrest

This invention relates to an apparatus and method for providing a massage especially to the back areas of persons who have to sit for a relatively long time on seats, especially motor vehicle seats. The massage is achieved in accordance with the invention by a periodic or a continuous motion of massage elements placed in the seat surface and/or in the back rest. The massage elements are able to move in a forward and backward direction and an up and down direction with respect to the seat. The apparatus includes a supporting element formed of a flexible material that is positioned on a frame of the seat, a drive mechanism, a mechanism operatively connected to the drive mechanism to cause at least a portion of the supporting element to be bowed to provide movement of the supporting element in a direction toward and away from a person seated on the seat for the purpose of supporting body surfaces of the person on the seat. The supporting element includes massage elements, a control mechanism to drive the supporting element vertically and in a bowing movement to cause at least a portion of the supporting element to move forwardly and rearwardly all with respect to the seat whereby the massage elements are caused to moved to along in at least two directions at the same time.

The invention relates to a support with adjustable arch, especially a lumbar support for seats, in particular motor vehicle seats and chair back rests as well as for any type of bed, the structure of which comprises an arching element and an adjustment device for setting and readjusting the arching of the arching element.

The invention relates to an adjusting device for an adjusting element which is arranged on a shaft, can be adjusted as desired in both directions of rotation by means of a drive and can be locked in any set position. The device has two jaws which can be moved together in a housing by means of the drive and, at least one end, are each in zero-play contact with an arm of a scissors-type arrangement, the opposing arms of the scissors-type arrangement being in zero-play contact with an output drive element which is rotatably mounted and connected to the adjusting element.

Adjustment apparatus for a resiliently flexible support element of a back rest

The invention relates to an apparatus for the level adjustment and/or arching adjustment of a flexibly resilient support element (4) for the lordosic vertebrae of a sitting person, and which is fitted in the fame (1) of a back rest of a seat, each apparatus comprising a gear mechanism (12) including a worm (14), a worm gear (15), a pinion (16) and a tooth element as well as a drive means. According to the invention the gear mechanism is directly connected to the drive means in such a manner that the rigid drive shaft (13) thereof carries the worm (14) engaging into the worm gear (15), the pinion (16) being fixed axially in the work gear (15) in tooth engagement with a gear wheel (17) in a plane parallel to the worm gear (15). The gear wheel (17) being associated with at least one reel (21) to which the one end of the sheathed cable (23) of a Bowden cable assembly (24) is fixed and onto which it can be wound, the gear wheel (17) comprising at least one projection, which coacts with stop surfaces inside the casing (11) of the gear mechanism (12) to limit in a defined manner the movement of the gear wheel (17). Preferably the drive means is an electric motor.
