The method comprises the following steps: determination of the revolution rate of the engine as a function of time; differentiating the determined revolution rate of the engine against time; determination of the speed of the vehicle; and determination of the engaged gear based on characteristic curves of the revolution rate of the engine as a function of time for a number of the gears in the case of a fixed rate of engagement of the clutch, the revolution rate of the engine, the differential of the revolution rate of the engine against time and the speed of the vehicle.

In one example, the system may include a water container, a water inlet for inputting water into the intake manifold, and a throttle valve that is arranged between an intake manifold inlet and the internal combustion engine, with the water container arranged at a higher point than the water inlet and the water inlet opening into the intake manifold downstream of the throttle valve. Methods and systems are provided for reducing coking deposits in a fuel injection system. In one example, a method may comprise humidifying intake air of an intake system of an engine in response to a determination that fuel injector coking is occurring, or after a duration has passed since a most recent humidification event. A humidifying fluid, such as water, may be injected into the intake system to humidify the intake air, and the resulting humidified intake air may reduce and/or remove coking deposits on one or more direct fuel injectors of the fuel injection system.

Various systems and methods for determining a start of fuel injection including a gaseous fuel in an internal combustion engine are provided. In one embodiment, an end of gas injection, a duration of gas injection, and a start of gas injection in an induction pipe of a cylinder of an internal combustion engine is determined based on one or more operating parameters. An earliest possible start of gas injection is further determined, and if the start of gas injection is before the earliest possible start of gas injection, at least one of the one or more operating parameters is modified such that the start of gas injection does not occur before the earliest possible start of gas injection.
