An arrangement for retaining harmful substances contained in water seeping from a waste dumping ground body includes an impervious layer of mineral sealing materials, such as clay, with an adjacent adsorption layer containing materials capable of binding harmful substances by physical and/or chemical adsorption. The materials may be in the form of admixtures. When seepage water flows very slowly through a layer of mineral sealing materials, it is possible to remove and retain the harmful substances. The permeability of the arrangement reduces with time due to the adsorption process with its sealing effect improving over geological time periods.

Impervious layer formation process and landfill adsorption system

To secure roadways and wall surfaces of open cuts and tunnels, a rock anchor assembly is inserted into and secured within a borehole in a receiving material. The rock anchor assembly is made up of an axially elongated tension member laterally enclosed in part by an axially elongated sheathing tube so that the tension member projects outwardly from the opposite ends of the sheathing tube. In the insertion direction, the leading end of the sheathing tube is secured in tension-resistant locked engagement with the tension member. Initially, a hardenable adhesive material is injected into a borehole and then the assembled tension member and sheathing tube are inserted into the adhesive material so that the unsheathed end of the tension member is anchored in the base of the borehole. The trailing end of the sheathing tube has a flange which bears against a anchor plate in contact with the surface of the receiving material in which the borehole is formed. An anchor nut is secured on the tension member and presses the trailing end of the sheathing tube against the anchor plate and the anchor plate against the receiving material. Accordingly, the leading end of the tension member and the anchor plate can be used in common by both the tension member and the sheathing tube for anchoring purposes with the sheathing tube anchored at both of its ends.

Rock anchor assembly for securing roadways and wall surfaces of open

A tension member is secured at each end to a separate anchoring system for transferring the tensile force from the member to a support structure. The tension member is made up of individual elements disposed in parallel over an axial length located between the ends. After the individual elements are tensioned, open spaces around the elements within the tubular casing are filled with cement grout. Between the tubular casing and each anchoring disc the individual elements extend through and are guided within an anchoring pipe. One end of each anchoring pipe bears against the associated anchoring disc and supports the anchoring disc. A radially outwardly and inwardly projecting annular collar is formed in the anchoring pipe and the collar forms an outwardly extending annular shoulder for transferring the load from the anchoring disc to the support structure. Since the collar is spaced from the anchoring disc, the stress developed due to live loads in the tension member in the axially extending region between the collar and the anchoring disc, is reduced at least in part due to the compressive forces which prevail in this region of the anchoring pipe. Accordingly, alternating stresses caused by live loads do not reach the location where the individual elements are secured to the anchoring disc. Such an arrangement improves the fatigue strength of the tension member.

In an anchored tension member individual elements, such as steel rods or the like, extend between a pair of anchoring discs each of which is secured on a support. One support is spaced horizontally and vertically from the other so that the tension member extends at an acute angle to the horizontal. In assembling and installing the tension member, first one individual element is placed through a tubular casing resting on the support of a support structure which incorporates one of the supports. Next, the individual element is tensioned between and anchored to the anchoring discs. During this operation, the tubular casing is lifted off the surface and extends rectilinearly between and is spaced from both of the anchoring discs. In turn, the remaining individual elements are placed through the tubular casing, tensioned and then anchored to the anchoring discs. As a result, the tension member can be installed in position without additional auxiliary apparatus, such as lifting devices and scaffolds.

Tension member and a method of assembling and installing the tension

A floating structure is used for transforming thermal energy in sea water into another form of energy, such as electrical energy. The structure consists of a floating body with a tube extending downwardly from the center of the body for a considerable depth into the water for drawing cooler water upwardly for use in the energy transformation process. The floating body may be a single floating element or a group of such elements connected together, preferably in a symmetrical arrangement. The floating element includes a downwardly open air chamber in its lower surface. The outer wall of the air chamber forms a number of passageways for drawing warmer sea water upwardly from near the water surface for use in the energy transformation process.

A flowable concrete mixture which possesses high strength and which provides facile placement of the mixture in structural forms composed of cement glue and aggregates, the viscosity of the cement glue and volume weight of the aggregates being adjusted so that the aggregates are suspended in the cement glue and remain suspended until the cement glue hardens.

A semi-submersible floating structure includes a horizontal platform with a symmetrical arrangement of buoyant bodies extending vertically downwardly from the platform. The buoyant bodies consist of a tubular column secured by a bending-resistant connection to the platform with a closed container secured to and extending downwardly from the lower end of the tubular column. The horizontal cross-sectional area of the closed container is for most of its vertical height greater than the transverse cross-sectional area of the tubular column. At least the lower portion of the closed container has a curvilinear surface. An annular wall extends around and is spaced radially outwardly from each of the closed containers and the wall, in combination with the enclosed container, forms an annular chamber therebetween open at the bottom and closed at the top. The platform and the buoyant bodies are formed of reinforced concrete or prestressed concrete.

Semi-submersible floating structure

A float construction is formed of at least one closed storage chamber arranged to float on the surface of a body of water with walls extending downwardly from the storage chamber and forming a plurality of chambers open at the lower ends. When the storage chamber is floated, water completely fills the chambers below the storage chamber so that the natural frequency of the float construction is varied for the different vibrations to which it is exposed.

Float construction for reducing pitching, rolling or dipping

A float for the intermediate storage at sea of crude oil, liquefied gas and the like, is formed of a toroidal body of revolution having a vertical axis. The toroidal body consists of a bottom plate in a form of a shallow annular shaped dish closed across its top by a circular cover plate. Partitions divide the interior of the body into individual compartments. Extensions projecting radially outwardly from the circumferential pheriphery of the body form docking surfaces and can house driving engines for propelling or positioning the float.

There is disclosed apparatus for the sectional cantilever construction of bridge girder systems of reinforced or prestressed concrete having a superstructure comprising a closed box cross-section and superimposed laterally overhanging bridge decking, said apparatus comprising travel devices for abutting against an already finished part of the bridge superstructure at whose position fixed support members, e.g. hydraulic jacks are disposed during the concreting operation, longitudinal girders projecting in the concreting condition over the front end of said finished superstructure part and connected to said travel devices or fixed supports therefor; shuttering components, for a cantilever section, carried by said girders; and half-frames engaging laterally round said bridge deck and having means for supporting on said bridge deck; the apparatus being further characterized by said longitudinal girders being arranged laterally outside the shuttering for the side walls of the superstructure and being connected with outer shuttering made inherently rigid and self-supporting; by said half-frames being connected (in such a way as to be rigidly resistant to bending) to longitudinal girders substantially at the rearward ends of said shuttering; by said longitudinal girders being provided at the side opposite the part which is projecting and which carries said shuttering with devices for abutting against or supporting the underside of said laterally overhanging bridge deck. There is also disclosed an auxiliary structure for use with such apparatus.

Apparatus for the sectional cantilever construction of bridge girder

The tank ship is made of monolithic reinforced concrete and is formed with two symmetrical, longitudinal chambers for tanks, and an intermediate space for the operating mechanisms thereof. The massive reinforced concrete slabs which form the ship are reinforced partly by prestressed steel tendons and partly by mild (non-stressed) steel rods. The prestressed tendons running lengthwise of the ship are unspliced. The transverse bulkheads forming the ends of the tanks are curved in two directions, e.g. in the form of sections of hemispheres. Insulation is provided on the interior surface of the tank chambers and on both sides of the bulkheads.

Tank ship, especially liquified gas tank ship

A cable-stayed girder bridge having a concrete deck girder which includes longitudinally extending stiffening girders having cables embedded therein and a laterally extending deck portion is constructed by sequential formation of said deck girder in successive adjacent sections. The longitudinally extending stiffening girder portions of said deck girder are first formed, support cables are embedded therein and subsequently tensioned. After hardening of the stiffening girders, the laterally extending deck portion of the duck girder is formed. A form carrier movable along the bridge during its construction extends in a cantilevered arrangement from a previously formed deck girder section to provide support for a successive deck girder section during formation thereof.
