In a method for assessing a condition of a particulate filter for use in an internal combustion engine of a motor vehicle, a difference between a pressure exerted on the input side of the particulate filter and a pressure exerted on the output side of the particulate filter is recorded by a differential pressure sensor. The difference in pressure is taken into account when assessing the condition. Furthermore, the pressure exerted on the output side of the particulate filter in relation to the atmospheric pressure is recorded by a relative pressure sensor. When assessing the condition of the particulate filter, the pressure recorded by the relative pressure sensor is also taken into account. A frequency of changes in pressure and/or an amplitude load of the pressure is assessed. The invention also relates to an exhaust system for a motor vehicle.

In a fuel supply arrangement for supplying fuel from a fuel tank to the fuel injectors of an internal combustion engine by an electrically operated fuel pump, a first fuel pressure level adequate for normal engine operation is provided by the fuel pump and means are provided for increasing the fuel injection pressure provided by the pump for supplying fuel at a higher pressure level to the fuel injectors during an engine start-up or warm-up phase.

In a fuel supply system for an internal combustion engine including a fuel tank with an activated carbon canister in communication therewith for removing hydrocarbons from the fuel tank venting gases, the activated carbon canister is vented selectively by compressed air conducted from a pressurized air supply for the engine through the canister under the control of a valve which, during flushing of the activated carbon canister, blocks the communication line between the fuel tank and the activated carbon canister and by which the fuel vapors are returned to an engine intake manifold via a suction line, or during normal operation of the engine, by air sucked through the activated carbon container to an inlet manifold of the engine. The activated carbon container can be flushed with positive pressure when the engine is operated with supercharging and with negative pressure when the engine is operated in a normally aspirated fashion.

The invention relates to a gasoline engine having a catalyst for reducing the emission pollutants, with an oxygen absorption device located in the exhaust line upstream of the catalyst. According to the invention, the gasoline engine is operated in a first operating range with a lean air/fuel ratio (.lambda.), and oxygen is removed from the exhaust by the absorption device. In a second operating range, the gasoline engine is operated at .lambda.=1, and the absorption device is bypassed or deactivated. In the case of a gasoline engine with a Denox catalyst the gasoline engine is operated constantly with a lean air/fuel ratio, with the active surface of the Denox catalyst being 'depoisoned' temporarily by activating the oxygen absorption device.

In an exhaust gas turbocharger for an internal combustion engine comprising a compressor and an exhaust gas turbine mounted on a common shaft, the exhaust gas turbine includes a rotor with radial and semi-axial flow inlet areas and a single-flow duct surrounding the rotor and having port regions in the form of annular nozzle structures with guide vanes disposed adjacent each flow inlet area which are divided from one another by a ring of streamlined shape which is mounted to the guide vanes of one of the adjacent nozzle structures, said guide vanes having at least portions which are movable for adjusting the flow cross-section of the respective annular nozzle structures for controlling the flow through the radial and semi-axial flow inlet areas.

Exhaust gas turbocharger for an internal combustion engine

An internal combustion engine with combined pressure charging has an exhaust turbocharger turbine arranged in an exhaust conduit of the internal combustion engine driving a compressor arranged in an intake conduit. A mechanically driven supercharger is arranged downstream of the compressor and is coupled continuously variably to the engine via a Fottinger speed transformer with variable-pitch guide vanes and variable speed slip. To bypass the mechanically driven supercharger, a bypass conduit is provided. A circulating-air slide is arranged in the bypass conduit for controlling the air quantity bypassing the mechanically driven supercharger. The degree of opening of the circulating-air slide and the slip of the Fottinger speed transformer are controlled as a function of operating parameters such that the charge-air pressure is adjusted to a predetermined set point value.

An exhaust-gas turbocharger for an internal-combustion engine is described, its turbine having a double flow housing with two channels for supplying the exhaust gases to the turbine wheel, of which on channel can be closed off as a function of a variable operating parameter by means of a sliding sleeve which is mounted in the housing so as to be axially displaceable by means of a control device. To ensure a clearly defined relationship between the adjustment of the sliding sleeve and the input variables and to create a heat-resistant control device, the sliding sleeve is connected to an axially fixed and circumferentially rotable driving ring via a positive sliding fit driving the sliding sleeve in the circumferential direction, a slot pin fixed to the housing engaging into an oblique helical groove in the sliding sleeve, and a shaft engaging on the driving ring via a positive connection and being guided radially out of the housing via a bearing in the latter.
