A method for detecting the presence of a microorganism in a fluid sample is disclosed. The method includes providing a fluid specimen within a specimen collection container having a sidewall defining an interior therein. The interior includes a mechanical separator adapted for separating the fluid sample into first and second phases within the specimen collection container and a sensing element capable of detecting the presence of a microorganism disposed therein. The method includes subjecting the specimen collection container to applied rotational force to isolate a concentrated microorganism region. The method also includes detecting by a sensing element the presence or absence of a microorganism within the concentrated microorganism region.

Method and apparatus for microorganism detection

Described are devices, methods, and systems that are suitable for rapidly and simultaneously determining the concentration of suspended particles in a sample. The devices, methods, and systems allow for the rapid and simultaneous interrogation of a large number of sample wells in a single vessel, for example, samples contained in a two-dimensional array or micro-titer plate, without the need for moving reading heads or moving the sample vessel. The nephelometry system allows the user to rapidly and simultaneously measure the concentration of the particles in numerous samples, adjust the concentration of the particles in the sample with a sample handling system, and re-measure the concentration of the samples in order to achieve a desired concentration.

Nephelometry method and apparatus for determining the concentration of suspended particles in an array of sample containers

A method and apparatus for determining the presence or absence of microorganisms in a liquid sample. A vessel with an electrode disposed therein receives a volume of liquid to be tested. A second electrode is also provided, both electrodes in physical contact with the liquid sample. A time varying signal is applied to one electrode, and the other electrode is coupled to a phase sensitive signal detector. The phase sensitive signal detector determines a frequency at which an out of phase signal amplitude is zero. This zero-crossing frequency is used as a baseline, and changes in the zero-crossing frequency are an indication of microbial growth.

Impedance-based bacterial detection system

A bacterial pre-concentration and detection system generally includes a collection tube (), a sensor () at the bottom of the collection tube, a moveable stopper () initially located toward the top of the tube, a piston () operatively connected to a robot for moving the stopper up or down the inside of the collection tube, and a hollow needle () penetrating the stopper and creating fluid communication with the inside of the collection tube. The system allows for the sample to be collected, lysed, centrifuged, concentrated, and interrogated with regard to the presence or absence of microorganisms with minimal steps and with a reduction in the time-to-detection, compared with conventional growth-based bacterial detection systems.

Bacterial pre-concentration and detection technique

In needle-based dispensing systems, the target amount of liquid to be dispensed is in many cases very well controlled. However, the amount of liquid that is actually reaching the receiving well may show a discrepancy, because part of the liquid leaving the inner needle space remains on the outer surface of the dispense needle, and so a small amount of liquid is 'lost' in the dispensing act. A sensor arrangement according to the present invention is suitable for detecting the presence of any liquid from the aspiration reservoir that is left behind on the outside of the dispense needle, before the dispense step is actually started. The 'lost' volume can also be measured very accurately by inserting the tip of a dispense needle into a hollow metallic cylinder, forming a capacitor, whereby the capacitance value depends on the volume of the &#x201c;lost&#x201d; dispense volume.

Various embodiments of the present invention provide methods and systems for optimally staining biological samples for analysis. In one embodiment, images of a sample are recorded before and after the application of a staining reagent and a decolorization reagent. A difference image is then generated based at least in part on a comparison of the images of the sample recorded before and after the application of the staining and decolorization reagents. Application parameters of the staining and decolorization reagents are then corrected based at least in part on the difference image such that the reagents may be optimally reapplied to generate a final image of the sample that may enable a user to better differentiate at least one target of interest in the sample. A diagnostic microbiological testing system and method for microorganism identification (ID) and antimicrobial susceptibility determinations (AST). The system includes multiple-well test panels capable of performing ID and AST testing on the same test panel. Each test panel is inoculated with reagents, broth-suspended organisms, and placed into the instrument system. The instrument system includes a rotating carousel for incubation and indexing, multiple light sources each emitting different wavelength light, precision calorimetric and fluorometric detection, barcode test panel tracking and a control processor for making determinations based on measured test data.
