The blowing wheel and preferably the heating wheel as well as a large blow molding machine are rotatably supported in a centerfree peripheral bearing means. The heating and blow wheels are constructed as wheel rings to provide a profile free of distortion, wobbling motions or, respectively, peripheral vertical deviations of the wheels are thus prevented and the delivery of parisons of thermoplastic material for processing on the wheels takes place with high accuracy.

Blow molding machine

The invention relates to a control means for actuating the valves for supplying pressurized blowing fluid and working fluid to the blow mold stations of the blow wheel of a blow mold machine. The blow wheel comprises a center-free wheel ring of which the outer periphery is rotatably supported on a base. Facing the inner periphery of the wheel ring there is a stationary rail on which carriages are adjustably mounted. The carriages accommodate cams for actuating the plungers of the valves mounted on the wheel ring through a yoke which provides a self-holding action. Thus, adjusting of proper valve operation is facilitated while the operation of the blow molding machine is continued.

In a process for producing hollow bodies of oriented thermoplastic material, a hollow blank having a bottom portion and a substantially cylindrical wall portion with an opening at its end remote from its bottom portion is subjected to pre-expansion in the region of the opening and then thermofixing in a subsequent treatment step. The thermofixing operation may be preceded by a mechanical expansion operation for orienting the plastic material forming the wall portion of the blank.

Process for producing hollow bodies of oriented thermoplastic material

A process and an apparatus for forming a flange on the wall portion of a hollow body of thermoplastic material with an opening at one end provides that the end part of the wall portion which defines the opening is heated and contracted by means of a force acting on the end portion from the outside thereof over the periphery thereof, whereupon the contracted end part is subjected to a pressing operation to form a flange extending around the contracted end part.

Process for forming a flange on a hollow body of thermoplastic material

A process for producing hollow bodies from oriented thermoplastic material wherein a cylindrical portion of a heated hollow preform which has a bottom thereon is subjected to stretching at a starting temperature which is below the vitreous transition temperature of the thermoplastic material, with the wall thickness of the preform being reduced in the stretching operation. Prior to the stretching operation the preform is heated in the portion in which the stretching effect begins, to a temperature higher than in the portion adjoining same. Stretching is preferably effected along the axis of the preform at different rates such that in the portion of the preform at which stretching begins, stretching is effected at a lower rate than in the portion adjoining same in the stretching direction.

Process for producing hollow bodies from thermoplastic material

In the production of hollow bodies from oriented thermoplastic material, a cylindrical portion of a heated hollow preform is stretched, with a simultaneous reduction in the wall thickness thereof, at a starting temperature below the vitreous transition temperature of the material. A mandrel is positioned in the preform to support it during stretching, the outside diameter of the mandrel corresponding to the inside diameter of the preform. Directly before the mandrel is inserted into the preform the preform is subjected to re-alignment to adapt at least the cross-sectional shape of the mouth opening of the preform to the cross-section of the mandrel. The re-aligning operation is effected by inserting the preform into a sleeve adjoining a drawing ring for carrying out the stretching operation.

Process and apparatus for producing hollow bodies from thermoplastic

In an apparatus for producing hollow bodies from thermoplastic material in large numbers a plurality of stations in which the blanks are successively subjected to various treatment steps are arranged at horizontal spacings around the peripheral surface of a vertical, substantially cylindrical housing of an operating unit of the apparatus. The blanks to be treated are passed downwardly through the operating unit and a first one of the treatment stations therein to the next station therein. Arranged within the operating unit is a cam drum which rotates about a vertical axis and which has cams adapted to actuate tools for treating the blanks in at least some of the treatment stations. Two or more such operating units may be connected in succession for carrying out successive treatment operations on the blanks.

Apparatus for producing hollow bodies of thermoplastic material

An apparatus for treating blanks of plastic material comprising a substantially cylindrical main frame structure, a central, coaxial cam drum which is mounted within same rotatably about its longitudinal axis and which is provided on its outside with working cams, and a plurality of treatment stations arranged in juxtaposed relationship around the periphery of the frame structure, with tools for processing the plastic blanks. The tools in a respective station are carried by vertically movable carriages, each of which is adapted to be moved up and down in the station by a cam follower guided by an associated cam on the cam drum. Each cam follower is carried by a drive carriage. The respectively associated tool carriages and drive carriages are each independently guided on the housing by vertical guide means and are interconnected by way of non-rigid connecting means. The guide means for the carriages are arranged in projection on to a plane perpendicularly to the direction of movement of the respective carriage, between the cam follower and the point at which a reaction force resulting from treatment of a said blank acts on the tool carriage.

Apparatus for treating blanks of plastic material

The mold halves of a blow mold device are mounted on a pair of arms encircling the mold halves in a semicircular arc which arms are latched together by latching means which are located at the parting line of the mold halves at both sides thereof. Due to this structure, merely the portion of the arms extending between said latching means is subjected to bending forces by the blowing pressure. For swinging the arms and actuating the latching means a common slide is provided in parallel relationship to the longitudinal axis of the blow mold, which slide includes a number of control cams which are engaged by cam followers cooperating with said arms and said latching means. The invention provides a compact and light-weight construction allowing to actuate a smaller mass in shorter time, thus increasing the production capacity of the blow mold device.

Blow mold operating and latching mechanism

In the art of blow molding thermoplastic articles a pair of blow mold halves is closed around a parison. A blowing medium is applied so that the parison is thus blown to a container configuration. In this blowing step very high closing forces are necessary to maintain the mold halves in closed position. The invention provides for a plurality of biased pistons which are actuated by a pressure medium to support the mold halves on a stationary frame.

Apparatus for blow molding plastic articles from a parison

An apparatus to make articles, in particular bottles, from parisons in a blow mold operation. The parisons are carried on transfer mandrels throughout the operation. The parisons riding on the transfer mandrels are heated while travelling around on a first wheel and are transferred into blow mold units mounted on a second wheel. Each blow mold unit is provided with an expanding mandrel which is extended through the transfer mandrel into the parisons. Two different blowing pressures are used in the blowing step which is controlled by cam controlled valves. From the second wheel the mandrels carrying the blown articles are transferred to an output wheel where the articles are removed from the transfer mandrels which are returned to the first wheel.
