The present invention relates to inorganic monolithic mouldings whose surface is coated with physi- or chemisorbed organic polymers, and to processes for the production of materials of this type. The materials according to the invention are highly suitable as sorbents for chromatography, in particular for high pressure liquid chromatography of biological materials.

C., then crystallizing the product at from 110.degree. to 200.degree. C. and from 0.01 to 50 bar and calcining it at from 400.degree. to 650.degree. C., and said zeolites are used as catalysts and/or adsorbents.

The invention relates to a process for the preparation of low-template clathrasil, comprising heat-treating an alkaline aqueous silicate-containing medium containing crystallization seeds and an amount of a template such that the template content of the clathrasil, relative to the number of moles of the SiO.sub.2 of the medium, is less than 2 mol %.

Highly monodispersed nonporous spherical SiO.sub.2 particles are prepared having mean particle diameters between 0.05 and 10 .mu.m with a standard deviation of not more than 5% and a method for the preparation of such particles. The particles can be produced by a two step process wherein first a sol of primary particles is prepared by hydrolytic polycondensation of tetraalkoxysilanes in an aqueous/alcoholic ammoniacal medium. The SiO.sub.2 particles are then converted to the desired particle size by a continuous measured addition of tetraalkoxysilane or organotrialkoxysilane controlled by the extent of the reaction. The SiO.sub.2 particles produced by this process are particularly useful as sorption material in chromatography.

Pentasil coated catalysts and fully crystalline catalysts in which the individual pentasil crystals are larger than 5 .mu.m are prepared by hydrothermal treatment of SiO.sub.2 by a process in which the SiO.sub.2 moldings are subjected to a hydrothermal treatment at from 140.degree. to 220.degree. C. in an alkali-free mixture of water, an amine and/or a tetraalkylammonium compound, with or without ammonia.
