An apparatus and method for leading together a number of printed webs is disclosed. Using a device for leading together several printed webs into a multi-layer web sandwich with a harp formed by the deflection rolls assigned to the individual printed webs, the inclusion of air between the webs can be prevented, in that a deflecting web sandwich guide is provided in the exit area of the harp and lies at right-angles to the running direction of the web sandwich.

A method for controlling the cut register in a web-fed rotary press, includes registering an actual value measurement of a position of cut register marks on a printed material web by measuring positions of printing cut register marks on the printed material web, using the measured positions in control loops as actual values of positions of cuts for cut register control, and correcting a first set value of a cut register setting element assigned to the printing material web based on a mathematical model for an error contribution of a proportion of the path of the printing material web that is not registered by the actual value.

In a method for controlling the cut register in a web-fed rotary press, in which the position of the cut in at least one printing material web is set by adjusting the rotational speed of at least one pull unit conveying the printing material web, the rotational speed change carried out on the pull unit is also carried out simultaneously on all the pull units that follow in relation to the running direction of the printing material web and convey only this printing material web. The first pull unit whose rotational speed is adjusted is preferably a printing unit of the press unit printing the printing material web.

A folding former of a folder for a web-fed newspaper press has a former nose and a pivot point or pivot axis, the folding former being pivotable about the pivot point or the pivot axis. A former inclination angle is changed by pivoting the folding former to horizontally displace the former nose. A former spread angle is also changed as a function of the former inclination angle. To align the outer edges of sections to be folded in the folding former, the former inclination angle and the former spread angle are set as a function of the number of pages in the sections to be folded.

A method for setting the cut register in a web-fed rotary press includes assigning a cut register function to a predetermined speed function, wherein the predetermined speed function describes a time curve of an operating speed of the rotary press starting from a predetermined initial value and the cut register function describes a time curve of the set value of the cut register, and changing the set value of the cut register continuously and synchronously in accordance with the associated cut register function during a variation in the operating speed of the rotary press according to the predetermined speed function, the cut register function being chosen empirically such that it counteracts a change in the actual value of the cut position as a result of the change in the operating speed.

An apparatus for adjusting pressure rollers and/or cutting knives includes driven pull rollers or driven pull and knife rollers extending over the web width arranged opposite the pressure rollers and/or cutting knives and at least two threaded spindles, which are used to axially adjust the pressure rollers and/or the cutting knives simultaneously or immediately one after another. During the axial adjustment, some of the pressure rollers and/or the cutting knives remain stationary, some of the pressure rollers and/or cutting knives are adjusted by a first adjustment travel and/or some of the pressure rollers and/or cutting knives being adjusted by a second adjustment travel.

A turner bar has an outer surface having a profile shaped for enabling air cushions to be built up between the outer surface and a printed material web which is fed around the turner bar. In addition, or as an alternative, a guide plate or an aerofoil profile may be arranged on the turner bar for creating the air cushion. Air may also be fed from radial holes or from holes in a guide plate to make it easier for the printed material web to slide over the turner bar.

Arrangements are described which allow a printing stock web to be reliably drawn through a drier. A draw-in member which grasps the tip of a printing stock web has a power transmission, e.g. a roller chain, which runs in a guide. Plates or blowing boxes which are movable vertically to the draw-in plane of the printing stock web and form closures in the guide by lateral projections of their side walls are provided to prevent dirt from penetrating into this guide. Rollers or cylinders are provided for additional correction of a lateral displacement of the printing stock web while the web is drawn in by the draw-in member. A friction-locking engagement, i.e., particularly rolling friction or adhesive friction, causes these rollers or cylinders either to exert a transverse traction on the printing stock web themselves or, in order to compensate for the lateral displacement of the printing stock web, secure the printing stock web in the correct position due to a transverse traction produced by an oppositely directed displacement of the guide.

A draw-in device for feeding a plurality of printing stock webs, preferably paper webs, in which draw-in elements of finite length grasp the start of a paper web and draw it out of reel changers and draw mechanisms through printing units and up to folding units. An electronic memory is provided in which are stored the lengths of all possible feed paths in the printing machine and the draw-in elements can be switched on at different times corresponding to the different lengths of the feed paths and the resulting time differences at a given feed rate via an electronic computer connected with the memory and can be switched off simultaneously. It is also possible to refeed a web of printing stock which was torn during the print process so as to substantially reduce wasted paper.

To prevent tooth-to-tooth engagement of an interengaging gear-worm pull-in arrangement for a paper web threading system for a printing machine, a transport sprocket wheel (10) is retained in a movable bearing (16), movable along an angle (.alpha.) which is an acute angle with respect to the axis of the pull-in element (1,2), and engaged with the pull-in element by a force acting counter the direction of movement of the pull-in element. The transport wheel center is, when engageable with the pull-in element, located along a bisector (19) of an angle (.beta.), which angle (.beta.) is defined by a tangent (17a) at a first contact point (17) between the transport wheel (10, 10b) and the drive wheel (12, 12b) and a second tangent line at a second contact point (18) between the pitch circle of the transport wheel (10, 10b) and the pull-in element. The bearing of the transport wheel can shift linearly, or along a small arc, the force being generated by the weight of the wheel or by a spring. A suitable angle of deflection for the transport wheel (10, 10b) is between 30.degree. and 70.degree., preferably along a line inclined about 45.degree. with respect to the running direction of the pull-in element.

To adhere an underlay in the clamping groove of a printing machine cylinder, for example a blanket cylinder of a rotary sheet offset printing machine, magnetic foil strips (7, 8, 23, 24, 33) are provided, clamping the end portion (6, 22, 32) of the underlay (4, 19, 30) either between two foil strips (FIGS. 1, 2) or against a magnetic portion within the groove, typically the inner side wall surface (9, 20, 34) defining the groove. The other end portion of the underlay can be left free, and will be clamped in position by stretching the rubber blanket or printing plate, respectively, over the cylinder.

To provide for selective printing by a five-cylinder printing machine either in single prism printing (1/0) or double prime printing (2/0) or prime-and-verso printing (1/1), at least one (3) of the printing cylinders can be selectively positioned by a crank arrangement (16, 15, 15a) which is coupled to a link (13) which link, in turn, operates a lever of an eccentric bearing (12) such that when the first printing cylinder (3) is to be, selectively, in engagement with either the impression cylinder (1) or the second blanket cylinder (2), the link is in a position at which the link passes through the axis of rotation of the crank so that reactive rotary forces from the blanket cylinder will not be transferred to the crank and hence will be isolated from an operating element (18) which moves the crank arrangement. Preferably, the crank arrangement is formed by a gear segment (15) which is rotated by a segmental gear (16), coupled to a linear piston--cylinder arrangement forming the operating element (18).

To permit exchange of printed subject matter carried on a plate of a plate cylinder (10, 16) of two printing couples (8, 10; 12, 16) which are selectively engageable with an impression cylinder (4) which, for example, can be a blanket cylinder of another printing couple (3, 4), while continuing to print information from one of the plates (10, 16) of a selected one of the first two printing couples, clutches (9, 15) are provided to engage the respective printing couples through drive gears mounted on the shafts of the respective blanket cylinders (6, 12); circumferential register of the associated plate cylinders (10, 16) is obtained by axial shifting of the blanket cylinders (6, 12) and use of spiral gears in which the gears connecting the blanket cylinder and plate cylinder (6, 10; 12, 16) of one printing couple have opposite direction of gear inclination to the drive gear (7, 13) selectively engageable with the main machine drive, for example through a gear (5) on the impression cylinder (4) which, in turn, is coupled to the main drive gear (1). Thus, the gearing which is present to drive the printing couples can, likewise, be used to control respective circumferential register thereof.

The guide tube (16) is formed with a longitudinal slit which can be bent about a bending drum (6) of standard construction. In order to additionally introduce a longitudinal or spiral twist, a twisting element can be clamped about the tube, to introduce a twist, manually (FIGS. 1, 2), or upon rotating of the bending drum or disk (FIGS. 7, 8) by a coupled gearing. To retain the slit of the tube in proper dimension and alignment, and prevent deformation of the tube, a counter element with a groove (5) therein matched to the circumference of the tube is provided, and an insert strip (18) is located within the tube, which insert strip preferably has externally projecting portions (18a) for guidance of the strip between the counter element and the bending tube or disk, and a recessed portion (18b) extending within the slit (17) to prevent deformation of the tube and of the slit during twisting and/or bending of the tube.

To permit selective operation of a rubber blanket--plate cylinder couple located, respectively, above and below an impression cylinder for double prime printing, prime-and-verso printing, or printing plate change while printing is carried out with a remaining couple and during operation of the machine, two clutches (21 or 25) selectively feed a main rotary drive from a main gear (18, 19) to the drive gears (22, 23) of the upper blanket cylinder--plate cylinder couple (2, 4) or, upon operation of a clutch (25) via drive gears (26, 27) to the lower blanket cylinder--plate cylinder couple (3, 5). For prime-and-verso printing, only one of the clutches (e.g. 21) is operated. A further clutch (29) located on the shaft (13) of the upper blanket cylinder (2) can be coupled to the blanket cylinder shaft by a third clutch (29) which, for plate exchange during machine operation, is disengaged and, upon engagement, permits operation of the second blanket cylinder--plate cylinder couple in reverse direction--with respect to double-prime printing--while the second impression cylinder (25) then will spin freely on its shaft.
